The 2nd edition of the American and Ghanaian Chicken Recipe Competition took place at the Flair Catering Institute on Friday 8th July, 2016 followed by a Gala Dinner at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel where the winning contestant were declared.The event which was organized by the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers (GNAPF) seeks to contribute to the development of young Ghanaian culinary talents as they compete and share creative ideas using U.S chicken and local chicken. The event is also geared towards enhancing the capacity and capability of student chefs towards service delivery within the ever growing Hospitality and Gourmet Tourism sectors of the national economy as well as to promote the use and consumption of healthy chicken.

The budding student chefs’ assignment was to prepare a three course menu with chicken as the main ingredient including a side attraction. Seven (7) out of ten (10) Polytechnics in Ghana contested in the event and these were the Accra, Ho, Kumasi, and Koforidua Polytechnic. The others include the Sunyani, Tarkoradi and Tamale Polytechnics.

Ms. Rejoice Mayoe Akukumah and Ms. Millicent Azalu both level 200 students from the Hospitality Department, the latter being the ‘’runner’’ (Assistant) represented the Polytechnic and emerged winners of the event. For her Prize, Rejoice received an air ticket (Accra – New York – Accra) to travel to the United State of America USA, for a short culinary course with a prestigious culinary institution for close to five (5) weeks and certificate of participation.

The award was presented by Ms. Dzifa Ablah Gomashie the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, Ambassador Robert Jackson the USA Ambassador to Ghana and the Regional Director – Sub – Saharan Africa of USAPEEC Ms. Zelda Sharp. The Polytechnic also received a Samsung Deep Freezer and recipe books. Out of the other five (5) additional award Koforidua Polytechnic received prizes which include the most organized team and the most time conscious group. 

The hospitality department of the Polytechnic arguably known to be the ‘’Excellence Center of Hospitality Studies’’ has won several laurels in similar competitions. Kudos to the Head of Department and staff of the hospitality department especially their groomers Ms. Stella Appiah and Mr. Ebenezer Nartey who also accompanied the students to the event in Accra.
