Mahama's Corruption Administration Killing Ghanaians - Nana Konadu

The leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has accused the John Mahama-led administration of dissipating the resources of the country.
At an Electoral Commission-supervised ceremony to elect the Greater Accra regional executives of the party in Accra on Thursday, Nana Konadu said the Mahama administration's appetite for shady deals was killing the Ghanaian people.

She said for instance that, whereas it cost Dangote $12 million to build a 1000-bed hospital in Nigeria, the government was spending over $250 million to expand the Ridge Hospital to a 420-bed facility.

KNUST Students cry over bad roads

KNUST Students cry over bad roads
KNUST Students cry over bad roads
Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are unhappy due to the bad nature of roads linking their hostels and its environs.

The stretch of road which links Ayeduase, Kotei and New site all suburbs of Kumasi has been left unattended for years, making it unbearable for students who ply that route daily for lectures.

As a result of this, the cost of living has increased for the students since they have to pay extra money in order to get taxis to hostels in the area.

TECH 2

They complained that armed robbers and thieves have taken advantage of the situation and have been terrorising them on their way to and from lectures.

TECH 3

Some students that spoke with Ultimate news explained “to my hostel the road is fairly ok, to a point it’s tarred and to a point it’s a rough road, if you take a cab to that area you will be charged more because they will complain their cars will get spoiled”.

‘It’s very bad, gullies everywhere. Even taxies have a name for it, is it shock spoiler or something like that. I once heard there was a robbery somewhere but the police were not able to get to the place on time’.

TECH 5

However, the KNUST Hostel Owners Association also expressed worry about the nature of the road.

TECH 4

In an interview with Ultimate news’ the Secretary for the Association, Mr. Alex revealed that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and Urban Roads are responsible for the construction of the roads.

He explained that though the hostel managers pay taxes the road has been in deplorable state.

TECH 6

The hostel managers are paying taxes to the authorities concerned but to construct roads I think you know it is the core duty of a hostel manager,” he stated.
Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Office of the Urban Roads Department suggested that   fixing of the roads should be a shared responsibility between Urban Roads and the hostel owners.
The Regional Manager for Urban Roads Theodore Quaye assured that his outfit will move in to assess the roads for possible works to begin.

Death toll in Kolkata overpass collapse rises to 22

Death toll in Kolkata overpass collapse rises to 22
Death toll in Kolkata overpass collapse rises to 22
An overpass collapsed Thursday in the Indian city of Kolkata, crushing vehicles below it, killing at least 22 people and leaving dozens more missing, authorities said.
Maj. Gen. Anurag Gupta, from India's National Disaster Management Authority, told CNN early Thursday evening that authorities didn't then know how many people were driving across the bridge when it fell or how many more remained trapped.

"We cannot predict how many people are still under wreckage," Gupta said. "We can't tell, since it's a bridge and not a building."
Gupta said that in addition to those killed, at least 75 others suffered injuries in the midday collapse in a busy commercial area north of Kolkata's center.

Sgt. Saurav Benerjee of Kolkata police had said, at one point, that more than 100 were unaccounted for -- though that only means their whereabouts are unknown, not that that they're all necessarily trapped.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he was "shocked and saddened by (the) collapse of (the) under construction flyover."

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives in Kolkata," Modi added. "May the injured recover at the earliest."

At least 71 pulled from rubble

India's army has deployed four columns of rescue personnel, according to a tweet from a representative of the Indian Ministry of Defense. Three medical teams with two ambulances, doctors and nursing assistants are also there.
And the National Disaster Response Force has five teams at the site, with two more on the way.

Video showed swarms of people on the scene in Girish Park, a crowded neighborhood with many wholesale markets, where one section of the flyover overpass had fallen off. Some carried out pieces of debris, and others used fire hoses to spray water around the debris.

They managed to pull at least 71 injured people from the rubble, said Maj. Gen. Anurag Gupta of India's National Disaster Management Authority. It's not clear if those were among the 100-plus people unaccounted for mentioned by Benerjee.

Speaking on local TV from the collapse site, Mamata Banerjee -- the chief minister for West Bengal state, of which Kolkata is the capital -- announced that relatives of those killed in the collapse would get roughly the equivalent of $7,500 (American dollars).
Those critically injured, meanwhile, would get about $3,000 each.

Other collapses around South Asia

It was around midday -- which would have been a busy time in that part of Kolkata, one of India's biggest cities -- when slabs from the flyover fell on moving vehicles below, Benerjee said.

That overpass had been under construction for five years, a duration that CNN's Mallika Kapur in Mumbai said is not unusual in India.

Did that work have something to do with the collapse? Or did something else cause it?

Authorities didn't immediately say, focusing first on the rescue operation.
Deadly accidents like these have happened before.

Nine people died when a three-story residential building in the Thane district of Maharashtra state collapsed last July.

Five years earlier, several people were critically injured when a pedestrian bridge under construction in New Delhi fell while workers were laying a concrete slab, said Rakesh Mishra, chief engineer of New Delhi's Public Works Department.

Other parts of South Asia have seen similar incidents -- both in structures under construction and those that had been standing for years.
A four-story building in the northwestern Pakistani city of Lahore undergoing construction on its fourth floor collapsed in November, killing at least 23 people and injuring 80 others, local official Muhammad Usman said.

And on the outskirts of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, more than 1,000 people died when a poorly constructed garment factory caved in almost three years ago.

Pressure mounts on Zuma to resign

President Jacob Zuma
President Jacob Zuma
President Jacob Zuma has been dealt another blow and is likely to face even more pressure within his own party, the African National Congress, after the Constitutional Court on Thursday found he was liable to pay for some of the upgrades to his Nkandla home.
The Court has found the president failed to uphold, defend and respect the constitution as the supreme law of the land.

Zuma has already been under severe pressure because of the scandal erupting around the Gupta family and the offers it made to people of positions in Cabinet.

People in the ANC seem to be leading the pressure against Zuma, such as Gwede Mantashe and other leaders, may feel this gives them more momentum in what looks like some sort of move against Zuma.

But he still holds many of the aces even if today’s Top Six meeting decides to call a special National Executive Committee meeting, the president has strong support in that body.

Technically, he could only be recalled as party leader by a special congress and that seems unlikely at this point, unless he decides to take some other action.

‘I Support Zanetor Not That Party’ - Nana Konadu Rawlings

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, former First Lady
Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, former First Lady

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, former First Lady, has said she supports the parliamentary candidacy of her daughter Dr. Zanetor Rawlings but disapprove of her party, NDC.
“She is an adult woman, she is a medical doctor; she hasn’t lived here for some time so she doesn’t even know the nuances of the parties and so on but she has the right to decide which way she wants to go,” Mrs Rawlings, who is also the founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP) told StarrFMonline.com.

She added: “I support her as an individual but I am not going to support that party (NDC). I support her as a daughter but not her party”.

The candidature of Dr. Rawlings, who is contesting the Klottey Korle seat, on the ticket of the NDC has been fraught with controversies as the incumbent MP for the area is currently challenging her illegibility in court.

Nii Armah Ashitey contends that the medical doctor cannot represent the ruling party come November because she is not a registered voter in Ghana. His claims have been corroborated by the electoral commission. The matter is currently before the High court.

Khloé Kardashian denies fighting with Blac Chyna

Life in the Kardashian/Jenner household isn't exactly the telenovela we've been imagining in our minds ever since Blac Chyna started dating Rob Kardashian in January.

Life in the Kardashian/Jenner household isn't exactly the telenovela we've been imagining in our minds ever since Blac Chyna started dating Rob Kardashian in January.

On the most recent episode of "Kocktails with Khloé," the glammed up host made it clear that recent reports that she got into a screaming match with Chyna are completely false.
Khloé, 31, admitted that her family structure is dramatic—maybe because her brother is dating her sister's boyfriend's ex-girlfriend and co-parent—but she swears she's not feeding into any negativity.

"It sounds very dramatic, which it is, but I actually haven't seen Chyna in a few years," she said. "But her and I did not get into a fight. But I do love a good fight."

As we recently reported, family matriarch Kris Jenner is "grateful" to Black Chyna for helping her son regain his health and happiness.

Since Rob, 29, started dating Chyna, 27, back in January 2016, the former recluse has completely turned his life around. He began slimming down after a 100-pound weight gain, and also started reconnecting with family members, appearing in public and smiling for the cameras.

And judging by recent social media posts from Chyna, her relationship with Rob is stronger than ever.

Chyna took to Snapchat on Tuesday, March 29, to post a video of the couple hugging and cuddling in bed.

Before that, the couple showed themselves indulging in some yummy comfort food. Chyna showed Rob eating a bread roll stuffed with meat and melted cheese. She captioned the video "Cheat meal."

The key to Chyna's success with Rob, according to a source who spoke to Us Weekly, is the attention and care she shows him every day. Rob "went forever without any girl being interested in him," says the family friend. "His confidence was shattered for so long, so to have this banging girl all over him has given him a new lease on life."

Communist Vietnam named a woman for the first time to the influential role of chairperson in its rubber stamp National Assembly Thursday -- the country's fourth most powerful position -- state media said.

Veteran lawmaker and senior Communist Party official Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan was elected with 95.5 percent of votes after a poll in the country's 500-strong legislative body early Thursday, state-run VTV said.

"I would like to thank the National Assembly for electing me," Ngan said after the ballot, which was broadcast on VTV.

"I vow my resolute loyalty to the nation, the people, and the constitution," Ngan, who is from southern Ben Tre province, added.

Vietnam names first chairwoman of National Assembly

Ngan, 61, was selected for the National Assembly chair position in January during the five-yearly Communist Party Congress, which was this year overshadowed by factional fighting.

No other candidates were on the ballot paper and some 472 out of the 484 lawmakers present on voted in her favour, VTV said.

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, new chairperson of Vietnam's rubber stamp National Assembly, is the highest …

Her appointment means she is the highest ranking female party official.

The majority of Communist Party officials are men, but women are reasonably well represented in the ranks, with around 25 percent of National Assembly delegates being female.

Vietnam is in the midst of a leadership handover after the country's top communist leader, Nguyen Phu Trong, was reelected as party secretary general in January in a victory for the party's old guard.

Reformist Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung lost out in internal party elections and is due to step down next week, when the National Assembly will vote on his replacement.

This is expected to be Nguyen Xuan Phuc, currently a deputy prime minister, state media said.

Vietnamese reformist Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung lost out in internal party elections and is due.

On Saturday, the National Assembly will also elect a new president, expected to be Tran Dai Quang, a police general who rose through the ranks within the country's powerful Ministry of Public Security.

Political analyst Pham Chi Dung told AFP that Ngan's election as National Assembly chair was a strategic choice by the party to ensure a power balance between the country's key regions.

"It's no breakthrough," for gender equality, he said. "Ngan is from (Vietnam's) south and has support from (party secretary) Trong and (Prime Minister) Dung," he said.

Only a handful of the 19-member politburo, including Ngan, are from the country's south, analyst Dung said.

Vietnam fought a bitter decades long war pitting the communist north over the US-backed southern regime, which ended with a communist victory and reunification in 1975.

The ruling Communist Party strives to ensure a power balance between the key northern, central, and southern regions, often dividing top political appointments along geographical lines.

In the past, the leadership handover is decided in at the party congress and takes up to six months to be confirmed by the National Assembly.

Analysts say this year things have moved more quickly, partly because several top leaders are retiring from politics, and also because of an upcoming visit by US President Barack Obama in May.

Plane Drives Through City And Brings Rush Hour Traffic To A Standstill

(Pictures: CEN)
It’s not every day you’re stuck behind an plane in downtown traffic.

But this aircraft was spotted weaving in and out of cars in the streets of the Chinese city of Xi’an.

Luckily for motorists, the wings of the plane were removed in order for the craft to make it down narrow roads. Well, more narrow than a runway, anyway. See more photos below.

The sight of the 30m (100ft) long jet in midday traffic caused drivers and pedestrians to pause and take pictures.

The 30-tonne aeroplane was on its way to a local aviation school, where it will be used to train flight attendants.

The aircraft, which has been decommissioned, was bought from a local domestic airline by the school.

It took several minutes for the plane to be transported by a lorry through the streets, and pictures were posted on social media.

One web user who photographed the plane wrote: “I hear you have traffic jams in big cities – ours are quite different.”

I want to be remembered for stabilising the financial sector - Wampah

The exiting Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah
The exiting Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah
The exiting Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah, has said he wants to be remembered for the major reforms he initiated at the central bank that have resulted in the stability of the financial sector.

Dr Wampah, who retires this week, said a lot of the reforms had started yielding fruits, partly resulting in the current economic stability.
He mentioned the Deposit Protection Scheme and the Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Bills that are meant to sanitise and bring significant reforms into the banking sector.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Dr Wampah said the two bills, when passed into law, would consolidate the bank’s mission of promoting confidence in the financial system, especially in relation to protecting the savings of depositors.

They would also encourage financial inclusion and access to formal financial services.

“Those reforms have resulted in economic stability, thereby placing the economy on an even keel for development,” he said.

Some analysts have blamed Dr Wampah for his inability to curb inflation and stem the decline of the cedi, resulting in the introduction of some forex measures in 2014 which were later withdrawn after a barrage of criticisms.

Dr Wampah’s term officially ends on August 5 but he has to take his accumulated leave, cutting short his four-year tenure.

He officially notified the board of the bank of his decision not to seek a second term in office yesterday and thanked the members for their support during his tenure, according to a source close to the Central Bank.

Informing President Mahama

President John Mahama has also been informed of Dr Wampah’s intention to leave by the end of this month.

That decision, analysts say, is partly linked to the presidential and parliamentary elections planned for November this year.

"I have informed the President of my decision to seek early retirement and have agreed that I will exit at the end of March," he told the Daily Graphic.

"It is just fair to leave early in order to give enough room for my successor, whoever he might be, to settle down before we get to the elections," he said.

The outgoing governor discounted claims of political pressure to oust him due to the ongoing microfinance crisis.

He said one of his two deputies, either Mr Millison Narh or Dr Abdul Nashiru Issahaku, was expected to serve as interim central bank governor until President Mahama chose a permanent successor.

Once considered a rising star in Africa, Ghana has been dogged by large budget deficits, ballooning public debt and inflation that consistently tops government targets.

President Mahama appointed Dr Wampah amid serious fiscal imbalances caused mainly by election spending in 2012 and a burdensome public sector wage bill that complicated the bank's task of managing money supply.

Dr Wampah responded with a string of monetary policy reforms, including tighter foreign exchange liquidity management to slow down inflation.

The bank held its benchmark interest rate at 26 per cent during its latest rate decision last week.

Cedi and IMF programme

As a member of the economic management team, Dr Wampah also helped to negotiate a $918-million programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) last year aimed at re-establishing macroeconomic stability.

While the cedi has, for the first time in several years, withstood the seasonal first quarter pressure to rally, it has lost half of its value against the dollar since Dr Wampah was sworn-in in January 2013.

Consumer price inflation, meanwhile, slowed in February but still stood at 18.5 per cent. Such crippling figures have earned Dr Wampah heavy criticism from some quarters.

But there are yet others who have praised him for holding the cedi stable, even when other currencies are plummeting.

Dr Wampah, who will be 62 years this year, joined the BoG in 1986 as Deputy Manager and rose through the ranks to become the Governor of the bank.

He was appointed acting Governor in August 2012 and confirmed following the nomination of the then Governor, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, as the Vice-President.

He was confirmed in April 2013 to take retrospective effect from August 2012.

As Deputy Governor

Until his appointment in 2013, Dr Wampah was the Deputy Governor in charge of Research and Economic Policy, Banking Supervision, Financial Stability and Other Duties.

He obtained his Ph.D (Economics) from the McGill University in Montreal in Canada in 1986, with his areas of specialisation being Public Finance and Econometrics.

He has to his credit a number of publications, including his dissertation: Agricultural Pricing Policies in Developing Countries: The Case of Cocoa Pricing in Ghana.

He obtained his MA (Economics) in 1983 also from the McGill University with his areas of specialisation being Public Finance and Econometrics.

Dr Wampah also holds a B.A. Hons (Economics and Statistics) from the University of Ghana, Legon, which he obtained in 1977.

He was appointed Governor of the BoG at the time when the government’s budget deficit was high and the exchange rate of the cedi to the dollar very worrying, but he has been able to turn the two situations around, stabilising the cedi and reducing the government’s budget deficit, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.

Dr Wampah thanked President Mahama for the honour done him by appointing him to the high office of Governor of the BoG and pledged his support to anybody who would be appointed as the next Governor.

President Mahama also thanked Dr Wampah for his 30 years’ dedicated service to Ghana and wished him well in his future endeavours.

700 Fulani herdsmen invade Bole

700 Fulani herdsmen invade Bole

More than 700 Fulani herdsmen, including their families, have relocated from Bouna, a community in Cote d’Ivoire, to Bole in the Northern Region to seek shelter as refugees, following a conflict between them and the indigenes of the town, the Brifos.

Earlier last Friday, 268 of the herdsmen arrived in Bole. They, however, did not come along with their cattle.
The remaining 470 Fulani herdsmen are yet to go to Bole, although they have crossed over to Ghana through unapproved routes at Msunia, Tahirukora and Tampurikora in the Bole District.

As of the time of going to press yesterday, the Bole District Security Council (DISEC) was holding an emergency meeting on how to handle the herdsmen.

One of the herdsmen, Musah Hassan, 29, who was indisposed, died shortly after arrival at the Bole Government Hospital.

Cause

The herdsmen and their families fled to Ghana after they were chased out by the indigenes of Bouna.

The Brifos are said to be angered by the continued destruction of their farms by the herdsmen’s animals.

Confirmation

The Bole District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Eric Awiadem, confirmed the development to the Daily Graphic in an interview.

He explained that last Friday, March 25, the DISEC heard that there was a conflict between the Fulani herdsmen and the Brifo people.

He said based on that information, the DISEC anticipated that there might be a spillover of the conflict to Ghana, since it was close to Bole.

Assistance

Mr Awiadem added that the military was called in to take Reece at the border in order to forestall any eventuality, noting that the military assisted the police to bring the herdsmen from Bouna to Bole.

He explained that the herdsmen who were fleeing to Ghana could have been attacked by other Brifos living along the border had it not been for the presence of the military.

NADMO

The Bole District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Richard Abdulai Kaara, said the DISEC was working on how to bring the Fulanis to the district from the border so that it could monitor their activities well.

"The DISEC is meeting to find ways of handling them because the number is overwhelming," he stated.

He said it was likely that more herdsmen might enter the country through various unapproved routes.

"It is not only Bole that they can enter; some can enter Sawla, which is close to Bole, or even the Brong Ahafo Region because as soon as they cross the White Volta, they are in Ghana," Mr Kaara explained.

Cape Coast School for Deaf & Blind receive donation from Diplomatic Platform

Diplomatic Platform has presented assorted items worth GH₵10,000 to the inmates of the Cape Coast School for the Blind to help the school meet some of its daily needs after the NDC youth group toured the Central Region last week.
The items include bags of rice, boxes of Indomie noodles, tins of Milo and milk, cooking oil and assorted soft drinks.

Presenting the items to the inmates at a brief ceremony at the School’s premises in Cape Coast, Administrator of the Diplomatic Platform, Julius Logass, explained that the gesture forms part of President John Mahama’s Changing Lives and Transforming Ghana agenda.

“We are here for you to feel part of the Changing Lives and Transforming Ghana agenda of the NDC.

“We are also here to make sure that we extend what we have to the society but the less privileged ones as well,” he stressed.

Expressing the ideology of the Platform, which portray the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the only credible and competent party in Ghana, Julius Logass urged all and sundry to vote massively for President Mahama to win a second term in office.

Julius Logass also stressed the need for all and sundry to play a good role in ensuring that Ghana remains peaceful before, during and after the November polls.

Coordinator of the Diplomatic Platform Nii Ashitei Ashietey maintained that the platform has always made it a point to reach out to the disadvantaged in the society since its inception.

He pledged the group’s magnanimity will be extended to cover more of the less privileged ones within the society across the length and breadth of the country.

Headmaster of the School Setum Ametewee, who received the items on behalf of the School, was grateful to Kofi Matthew, a member of the Platform, for serving as a conduit between the school and the Diplomatic Platform to reach the inmates with the items on time.

He thanked the group for the support and also used the occasion to appeal to other philanthropic individuals and organizations to emulate the kind gesture.

Meanwhile, the Diplomatic Platform in the Central Region toured the Cape Coast Municipal Assembly taxi rank, where they interacted with the public, highlighting the policies of the NDC’s Better Agenda, the achievements chalked by President John Dramani Mahama during his first tenure of office as copiously documented in his ‘Green Book’.

They finally visited the Kotokuraba market located in Cape Coast where they inspected the ongoing market project, which is almost 80% nearing completion.

The Diplomatic Platform is a Whatsapp platform created with youth membership of 100 who share in the principles and ideology of the National Democratic Congress Party (NDC).

The Platform has stretched its charity arm to support a worthy cause in many ways by reaching out to most disadvantaged ones in the society since its inception in July 22, 2014.

PPP demands EC clarification on STL relationship

Mrs Charlotte Osei is the Electoral Commissioner of Ghana
Mrs Charlotte Osei is the Electoral Commissioner of Ghana

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has called on the Electoral Commission of Ghana to come clear on its relationship with Israeli firm Superlock Technologies Limited (STL), Ghana.

According to the party, the recent revelation by Minister of Interior Prosper Douglas Bani that STL transmitted results of the 2012 elections is a direct contrast to what the EC has put out about the company.

“This is because, the EC had publicly denied the fact that STL was contracted to tally the results of 2012 elections,” a statement issued on Wednesday, March 30 said.

Signed by PPP’s National Secretary Murtala Mohammed, the statement said the EC’s silence will mean that it “perpetrated a fraudulent explanation on us all when it was alleged that the STL was engaged in the transmission of results in the run up to the declaration of results in the 2012 elections.

“This clarification by the EC will have direct effect on our elections come November 7, when we go to the polls once again.

“The Progressive People's Party demand immediate clarification on this matter in order to salvage the credibility or sanctity of the 2016 elections.”

The statement issued by the second largest opposition party was in relation to the deportation of the three suspected terrorists from South Africa.

The ex-police officers were detained by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) but later released and sent back to their home country though legal processes had been initiated against them.

“We further call for the immediate resignation of the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Communications and his deputy for the spread of palpable falsehood laced with agitprop with the intention to deceive the people of Ghana.

“Moreover, the BNI officials must be sacked or made to face the full rigours of the law.

“Our Ministers and other Government officials must learn to act responsibly and be responsible for their actions. No man is above the law especially when you are paid with the public purse.”

Special breastfeeding areas to be set up at Kenya firms

Special breastfeeding areas to be set up at Kenya firms
A previous attempt to bring in a breastfeeding law was blocked by companies who threatened to stop employing women
Kenya's parliament has approved a bill which would force companies to set aside special breastfeeding areas for employees with children.

The breastfeeding stations would include breast pumps for expressing milk and fridges.

The bill also states that employers must give time for women to breastfeed.

Rachel Nyamai, the MP who proposed the bill, said it will help women work and at the same time improve children's health.

The law is not about dealing with a stigma around breastfeeding because breastfeeding in public areas is considered normal, says the BBC's Angela Ngendo in Nairobi.

Instead it's about making companies provide a conducive environment for working mothers, our correspondent adds.

Currently it is extremely rare for organisations in Kenya to have specific areas for women to breastfeed their children.

The same proposal was rejected by the previous parliament after business groups threatened to stop employing women if forced to provide breastfeeding facilities.

The Health Bill 2015 now needs the president's assent to become law.

The US is stepping up its troop presence in eastern Europe in response to an "aggressive Russia", the military has said.

From next year, three fully manned US combat brigades will be deployed.

The BBC's diplomatic correspondent says it is the most significant US reinforcement of Nato since tensions flared over Russian action in Ukraine.

Last month the Pentagon announced plans to quadruple its budget for European defence in 2017.

The additional presence will increase US ability to conduct military exercises in the region.

The plan demonstrates "our strong and balanced approach to reassuring our Nato allies and partners in the wake of an aggressive Russia in eastern Europe and elsewhere", said Gen Philip Breedlove, the senior US commander in Europe.

"Our allies and partners will see more capability. They will see a more frequent presence of an armoured brigade with more modernised equipment in their countries," he added.

'Division's worth of stuff'

Each brigade will rotate through the region for nine months before being replaced.

There are about 4,500 soldiers in a brigade, bringing with them military vehicles and other equipment.

"There will be a division's worth of stuff to fight if something happens," Deputy Secretary of Defence Robert Work told the Wall Street Journal.

Relations between Russia and the West have plummeted since Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in March 2014.

The intervention sparked fears that Russia was considering other incursions into neighbouring countries.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond told Reuters on Wednesday the situation in Ukraine had "gone backwards over the last few months, with more and more violations of the ceasefire".

Russia has accused Nato of using the situation in Ukraine as an excuse to move closer to Russian borders.

"Stories are being spread that Russia will send its tanks into the Baltic states, into Sofia or into Budapest. No-one intends to do that," Russia's Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov told German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

Some analysts suggested the US military could be planning for the post-Obama era.

The frontrunner to be the Republican nominee for the presidential election, Donald Trump, has strongly attacked the economic cost of US foreign policy.

In the Pursuit of Justice - LUG Law Society celebrates Law Week 2016

In the Pursuit of Justice - LUG Law Society celebrates Law Week 2016
In the Pursuit of Justice - LUG Law Society celebrates Law Week 2016
The Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) Law Society recently celebrated its Law Week from the 14th to 19th of March. Themed “In the Pursuit of Justice”, it was a week-long of activities that stimulated intellectual legal discussions, visits with a view to having practical understandings of the legal system in Ghana, an opportunity to reach out to less privileged persons within the community and an avenue for networking with prominent players within the Ghanaian legal sphere.

The law week started with an opening ceremony on Monday the 14th with distinguished guests including the Chief Justice (C.J.) of the Republic of Ghana Hon. Mrs. Georgina Wood (JSC) ably represented by Justice Joseph B. Akamba of the Supreme Court of Ghana. In her address, the Chief Justice admonished law students at LUG to develop high ethical standards and a genuine love for justice delivery. Afterwards, on the C.J.’s behalf, Justice Akamba declared the 2016 Law Week officially open.

The second day of the Law Week, first year law students took a trip to the Nsawam Prisons to witness firsthand the realities of the legal profession. While their junior colleagues where at the prisons trying to indeed ascertain whether the legal system in Ghana is indeed a just one, second year law students visited the Beacon House Orphanage in East Legon to reaffirm the humanistic and caring nature of the Law Society; presenting the kids at the orphanage with story and colouring books, taking the time to read and paint with them and also donating basic supplies like disinfectants and toiletries etc.

On Wednesday, the Law Society held its 2nd annual students symposium with its members delivering papers all geared towards a proper appraisal of the legal system’s strive to do justice and proffering suggestions to rectify perceived shortcomings.

It was a day to chill and relax at the Coco Beach Resort on Thursday, after three days of academic/semi-academic activities.

Friday however witnessed another cerebrally stimulating, engaging and exciting event as the first every moot competition in the history of LUG was held on that day. Arguing before the “Supreme Court”, the moot participants presented arguments for and against the validity of an Article 2 action challenging the constitutionality of Ghana declaring war on Togo in light of the “spirit of friendship with all nations” enshrined in the preamble of the constitution. This event ended with the judging panel praising the students for the level of advocacy skills they displayed and proffering advice on how to do better in the future.

The Law Week was crowned with a grand dinner/networking event which took place at Oak Plaza Hotel. In one sense, it presented a golden opportunity for Law Society members to mingle with and glean from the experience and wealth of knowledge of the distinguished lawyers present. On the other leg, it was an opportunity for Law Society members to reflect on the events of the week, be merry and dine in harmony.

Awards of various categories were given out to spice up the evening. Speaking at the event, one of the invited guests Raymond Codjoe Esq. of R. A. Codjoe Law Offices stressed on how in current times, even though the quality and numbers of those seeking education may have increased, legal education seems to have lost sight of ethics. He therefore made a call for a reevaluation of the educational system to enable theoretical and practical learning to go hand in hand with the teaching of ethics.

On his own part, the President of the Law Society, Alfred Momodu while thanking all the guests and stakeholders who made the week a possibility, appreciated the law students for their confidence in his leadership for the last one year plus. Going on to say that even though the dinner was one of his last official events as President, he was confident that he had built a solid enough foundation for an incoming executive to work on.

How the Kardashians are making serious money from Instagram & Twitter

The Kardashians
The Kardashians
Kim Kardashian and her sisters Kylie, Kendall, Kourtney and Khloe are changing the face of modern day advertising with the way they rake in huge sums from social media advertising according to new reports by Page Six.

Previously, companies do adverts on Television, radio and magazines but have now turned to social media and the Kardashian clan are making more money from this than any other celebrity.

Companies believe one of the the world's most famous families have such a massive influence on today's youths that they pay them millions to use their platforms. In simple words, the Kardashians are the mass market!

"In the old days, you’d buy ads in magazines and TV spots. Now, for $400,000, you get the Kardashians to post on Instagram.” according to quotes from the Page Six report.

The products include makeup, clothing and music.

How the Kardashians are making serious money from Instagram & Twitter

Kim under the influence of husband and rapper Kanye West makes as much as $200,000 per post but her sisters (Kloe,Kendall, Kylie and Kourtney) are all managed by their mum who does 'bundle-buys' suggesting companies pay for the siblings to post across their respective social media accounts.

But it's not just only on Instagram that the Kardashians are making money, Radar Online claimed back in 2014 that Kim Kardashian receives $100,000 for a full product endorsement on Twitter and can ask for anything between $750,000 to $1 million to put her face to a product.

My Experience: Meet Diane Esi Kaye of Lancaster University Ghana (LLB Law)

Diane Esi Kaye of Lancaster University Ghana
Diane Esi Kaye of Lancaster University Ghana
My name is Diane Esi Kaye, I'm a Ghanaian and an alumna of Wesley Girls High school. My life in Lancaster University Ghana started in the year 2014. During my entire foundation year, I made it onto the Provost’s List three consecutive times and was awarded with certificates and dinners each time.

Also in my foundation year, I undertook a project with a few of my mates to help the less privileged specially the homeless by organizing a charity bazaar to help raise funds for them, this was done hand in hand with an organization which helps take care of destitute children on the street.

I am also a member of the Ladies Lunch Box and Olympic Clubs.

"The best aspect of studying in Lancaster University Ghana is the fact that it's not a chew, pour and pass sort of institution but one that encourages students to do in-depth learning by forming their own opinions, to not be afraid to write a paper concerning issues in the country. I study Law and there is always a practical approach to what we are taught in class" - Diane Esi Kaye, LLB Law '18.

During my first summer vacation, I interned in the legal department at Cal Bank and then had the privilege afforded as by Lancaster University to see what life is like on the Lancaster UK campus for 3 weeks. It was an eye opening experience for me as I got to meet so many people from diverse backgrounds mostly from China, Russia, Malaysia, UK, India and Nigeria. It was so fun, parties on campus, karaoke nights, three days in London touring the vibrant city. Going around organizations in Lancashire and shopping trips in Manchester and not to forget the amusement park that I thought I would nearly die on the rides.

Some students from Lancaster UK also came to see what life in Lancaster University Ghana was like for 3 weeks. We took them sightseeing to some of the best places in Ghana, clubbing, going for field trips in companies like Coca Cola, Scanad, the pineapple farm to mention a few. And a weekend at Coconut Groove Hotel.

They really enjoyed their time and so did I because these were also a set of different people from all around the world. This also served as an internship opportunity for me with LUG Student Life Office and I got paid handsomely for it.

Why did you choose Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) and what is the best aspect of studying with LUG?
I chose Lancaster University Ghana for its globally recognized UK degree certificate and the quality of teaching and learning The best aspect of studying in Lancaster is the fact that it's not a chew, pour pass sort of institution but one that encourages students to do in-depth learning by forming their own opinions, to not be afraid to write a paper concerning issues in the country. I study Law and there is always a practical approach to what we are taught in class. Field trips to Nsawam prisons, the court etc. helps us to know the effect of the law and the power we have as future lawyers to serve justice.

What’s best about the social life at Lancaster?
The best aspect about the social life on campus is that since it is a small campus everyone knows everyone and so it’s like a family. The student life office is always open to take suggestions about ways to better our social life and the SRC takes active steps to make school fun like organizing parties, trips to the beach, Halloween nights, Christmas carols night, guest lectures etc. and the annual law dinner everyone looks forward to. The school is also in a location that gives students easy access to shopping centers, restaurants, gyms etc. Life

How does Lancaster University Ghana provide you with support, advice and guidance?
Lancaster offers students guidance and counselling by first of all having a school counsellor to help with whatever problems you might be facing. Lecturers have flexible office hours for students to drop by, and if you have a fear of talking to lectures there are student tutors to help you.
