Brief History of Spiritan University College

Spiritan University College started as an Institute of philosophy to give the first stage of priestly and missionary formation uniquely to candidates of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. It was opened on 17th December, 1990 and the foundation stone was laid by Very Rev. Fr. Pierre Haas, C.S.Sp blessed by the Most Rev. Peter Kwasi Sarpong.

In 1997, an initial two year programme was broadened to cover three years leading to the award of a Diploma in Philosophy and Religious Studies. In 2002, the proprietors decided to raise the academic standard to enable graduates to meet the intellectual challenges of the society of the day. Added to this, the proprietors saw the need to bring the benefits of Catholic and Spiritan education to the youth of Ghana and Africa by opening the doors of the College to the wider public.

The College was accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) on 25th September, 2005.
On 15th May, 2008, the College signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to offer Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Social Sciences. On June 20th 2008, the University college status was inaugurated.

On 1st September 2015, the NAB approved the request for accreditation of two new programmes namely, BA Sociology and Economics; and Diploma in Philosophy and Religious Studies.
The College started a Faculty of Business Studies with the following disciplines in September 2011: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with the following options: Accounting, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, Banking and Finance and B.Sc. in Economics and Finance, B.Sc. in Finance and Management. These programmes were accredited by the NAB on 1st April 2011.

The first batch of students of the BA Philosophy and Social Sciences and Diploma in Philosophy and Religious Studies programmes graduated on 19th June 2010 with degrees and Diplomas from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The first batch of students in the Sociology and Economics programme graduated on Wednesday 19th June 2013, including the first female student of the College.

The College signed an affiliation agreement with the Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit (hereinafter Duquesne University), USA to offer a Master of Arts (MA) in Theology programme on 2nd July 2014. The programme was accredited by the NAB on 1st April 2015. The MA Theology programme is a taught course handled by experienced faculty members from Ghana and Duquesne University (USA) at the College. The courses are well structured with flexible hours to suit the working class (clergy, religious, men and women). It is a summer part-time programme scheduled between May and August each year with residential and non-residential facilities. It is designed for those who wish to teach theology or improve on their competence or update themselves in theological studies for their ministry or prepare for doctoral level studies in theology or as a renewal programme. It is an integrative curriculum for the theological education of people engaged in a variety of pastoral ministries. The programme started in June 2015.

The first batch of students in the School of Business graduated on 24th October 2015.
The College is seeking affiliation from University of Cape Coast to offer a bachelor’s degree in Education (B. Ed Social Studies). We intend to begin this programme in September 2016.

MISSION

Through a comprehensive Catholic and particularly Spiritan formation, students shall be taught to appreciate the human condition and enable them make an informed decision about, and preferentially opt to commit themselves to the service of the poor and marginalized in our human society.

VISION:

The vision of the College is to be an academy of excellence in research and the teaching of African Philosophy..

MOTTO

The motto of the College is “Spiritus Veritatis” which means “Spirit of Truth” The whole purpose of education is to lead one to discover truth and wisdom.

LOCATION:

Spiritan University College is located at Ejisu, one of the most historic towns in the Ashanti region. On the Kumasi – Accra road, take the left road, at the Yaa Asantewaa Round About, leading to Ejisuman Senior High School and Abankro township. We are next to Ejisuman Senior High School
