We'll go to our village to farm if NDC loses - Alfred Mahama

Alfred Mahama, senior brother of President Mahama.
Alfred Mahama, senior brother of President Mahama.
There are two things in elections, it’s either you win or you lose. So losing an election wouldn’t be a problem for my brother” – Alfred Mahama, an elder brother to President John Dramani Mahama has said prior to the December 7 elections.

In an interview on OKAY FM’s morning show dubbed 'Ade Akye Bia', Alfred who is also a businessman and mining consultant noted that, his brother will not hesitate to venture into farming should he be kicked out from office.

“If my brother falls behind Nana Addo in the upcoming elections, we will pack our things and go to our village and continue with our farming. We [Myself, John Mahama and Ibrahim Mahama] were all farming before politics, so President Mahama will go back to farming if Ghanaians do not vote for him,” he told host Kwame Nkrumah Tikese.

Alfred Mahama however lauded his brother for his tremendous developmental projects across the length and breadth of the country, but said – “Ghanaians, it is not development and mounting structures or good roads, what they need is just make sure the money flows into their pockets. The president will reshape his strategy and tune himself to what Ghanaians want if maintained.”

To him, this elections should not be violent – “it is not a do or die affair. All we are doing is working hard to maintain him [President Mahama] in power.”

20-yr-old lady puts her virginity up for sale; bid now stands at $400K

In 2014, her home was destroyed in a fire and has since not been renovated
In 2014, her home was destroyed in a fire and has since not been renovated
She is selling something most people would never think to sell, her virginity, and she expects to make nearly half a million dollars doing it.

Katherine Stone, a 20-year-old lady from Seattle, is selling her virginity and she’s doing it for love, she told CNN. More specifically, she’s doing it for love of her family. In 2014, the Stone’s family home was destroyed by a fire but were forced to live on the property because they lacked insurance.

According to Stone, she found an online ad for a legal brothel in Nevada. “It made me think, it’s a chance at fixing all that I need to fix,’” Stone said. So she contacted Nevada magnate Dennis Hof, who owns seven brothels, and signed a contract with him to sell her virginity to the highest bidder.

Per CNN, Hof will take 50 percent of the profits. At the moment, CNN reports, Stone is still in the bidding process of her sale. She said the current bid is $400,000, but she has not accepted any offers yet. In addition to the money, Stone said she wants to have a “connection” with the man she eventually does choose.

“I’m waiting for a man who I feel a connection with so that the experience can be special for both of us,” she told CNN. “It’s really not just about the money.” Stone’s decision has, unsurprisingly, been met with criticism online, as some commentators feel she is devaluing herself and selling something she should only give up for love. She is aware of those criticisms and just doesn’t care. “I obviously value myself. … I have the right to choose what I do with my body,” she said. “And in this troubling economy, do you blame me?”

Besides, she said, her reasons for doing so are noble. “People say you are suppose to do it for love,” Stone said. “But if you think about it, I am doing it because I love my family.” But after Stone does lose her virginity, she said, she plans to stay in the brothel for several years and then attend law school in the future.

NDC threatening voters with death – Amoako Baah

Dr. Richard Amoako Baah
Dr. Richard Amoako Baah
A political science lecture and former head of the political science department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Richard Amoako has alleged that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is threatening voters in the Upper West region with death if they fail to vote for the party.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Rainbow Radio’s Kwame Tutu, Dr. Richard Amoako Baah said, the NDC is intimidating voters to vote for them because it obvious that they are losing the general elections due to their abysmal performance.

The controversial lecturer noted that, opinion polls available indicate that the ruling government is bound to lose.

However, they [NDC] will use and are using intimidation and threatening people to vote for them. Dr. Amoako Baah said, if the elections should be organized in a credible, and transparent manner, the NDC will lose hands down over their incompetence.

According to polls conducted, the NPP is likely to win the 2016 presidential election but we have about one month to the election and anything can change. There are factors that may influence the outcome of this election.

It is very precarious to say that NPP will win because the factors that may affect this year's election may include cheating, vote buying and intimidation. As I speak to you, there are some voters in the Upper West region who have been threatened by the NDC with death if they fail to vote for them.

I received a call from a resident from the region that some members of the NDC have started threatening them with death should they fail to vote for them. They have threatened them with guns, cutlasses and matches. This is what is going on. People are being intimidated.

These are some of the issues that makes it difficult for the NPP to win the polls as predicted by some political commentators.

Leader and founder of International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Kwadwo Obinim has broken his long time silence on the allegations that he shared bed with his junior pastor’s wife.

According to Angel Obinim in an interview with Mr Sammy on OB TV, even though he slept with the lady, Gifty, she was not married to his junior pastor and even that incident happened very long time ago.

“I can swear with my Bible and my ministry that I have not slept with anybody’s wife. At that time, the lady was not a married woman then but I slept with her. She even wanted to have a child with me so I told her God has not given me the go ahead to marry you. Even Sefa Kayi interviewed me about that and I confirmed having an affair with the lady.”

There has been that allegation Bishop Obinim has shared the bed with his junior pastor’s wife which he has remained silent about that.

Lecturer predicts landslide victory for NPP

The Head of the Political Science Department, University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Bossman Asare, has said that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is likely to clinch a landslide victory in the forthcoming polls.

This, he said, would be made possible because of the inability of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to manage the economy and other resources of the country as expected.

He disclosed this while speaking at a roundtable conference themed, ‘Expanding the frontiers of electoral politics in Ghana’ yesterday hosted by the department.

Many think-tanks and scholars were in attendance at the function.

Speaking on the subject, “the different political parties, presidential candidates and their political platforms,” he observed that the two major political parties have maintained their candidates from the 2012 elections, adding that with the diminishing influence of the third parties, it is likely that Ghanaians would witness a first round victory.

“The NPP candidate is contesting for the third time and it appears with economic challenges the country has been experiencing in recent times, this candidate exudes so much confidence in the electorate to vote for him and a vice presidential candidate, who has persistently been a thorn in the flesh of the ruling government,” he noted.

He predicted that the 2016 election was definitely going to pull surprises for the first time since independence, adding that the 2016 election will have a divided government for the first time since independence.

The academic described Alhaji Bawumia as a candidate who has brought lots of attraction to the NPP due to his knowledge about the economy, but expressed disappointment that he has become a figure for insults and all forms of attacks from government and the NDC.

Dr. Bossman Asare further explained that incumbency advantage may not always be a winning ticket for government in power in every situation, especially when people feel dissatisfied with its performance.

“NDC has the President of the Republic as their candidate. No sitting President has lost election in Ghana’s fourth republic; nonetheless the reality is that the environment now looks different,” he noted.

He mentioned that much as the ruling NDC during its tenure of office has embarked on a number of infrastructural projects, it was not enough to overturn the very high rate of unemployment, poor management of the economy, power crisis and the high incidence of corruption that has engulfed the country.

The Director, Africa Region-International Initiative for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), Prof. Adebayo Olukoshi, said that Africa has lost trail of the ideals of the founding fathers of the continent who made sacrifices to fight for independence from the colonial masters.

He blamed the continent’s present state on greed of its leaders who rather exploit their people.

15, 000 job seekers besiege Accra for GRA's aptitude test

Some of the job seekers preparing to write the test at PRESEC Legon.

Thousands of job seekers on Saturday turned up at designated exam centers in Accra to write an aptitude test that they hope will advance them closer to earning employment with the national tax collection and administration body, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The candidates are writing the test in designated exam centers across the Accra and Tema Metropolises. The centers include the main campus of the University of Ghana, Legon, St Peters Senior High School, some branches of Ideal College, Legon PRESEC and Armed Forces Senior High Technical School.

Revenue Authority (GRA). Graphic Online checks with GRA officials at one of the exam centers showed that some 15,000 candidates are participating in the test, which has been divided into two sessions morning (9am) and afternoon (2pm).

At Legon PRESEC, where three classroom blocks were allocated to the test alone, index numbers given ended at 8,193.

All the candidates called for the October 29 test are the 'lucky few,' who sailed through the first stage of the authority's recruiting process submission of application letters and other relevant documents which took place earlier in the year.

After today's exercise, those who will be able to sail through the aptitude test are expected to be invited for interviews before suitable candidates are picked for the jobs.

The swell in the numbers at the various centers underscored the mounting unemployment situation in the country, which has been exacerbated by the net freeze on recruitment into the public sector.

It is not clear how many GRA intends to employ but it is obvious the authority will not be able to absorb half of those invited for the exam.

Dangote focused on growing Ghana's economy - MD

Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Group of Companies
Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Group of Companies
The Dangote Group of Companies are focused on contributing to the economic growth of Ghana through job creation and the payment of taxes and would, therefore, not be drawn into any smear economic campaign.

"Within only six years of operating here in Ghana, we have, as of today, over 2,000 workforce on our payroll,” he said.

“The figure does not include the 2,400 drivers' mates that assist our drivers on the road and the over 20,000 people who are indirectly benefitting from our operations in Ghana."

Mr Tor Nygard, the Managing Director of Dangote Ghana, announced this at a media conference in Tema to outline their contributions to Ghana's economy and refute some allegations their competitors had levelled against them.

He said apart from being the largest employer in the cement industry, the introduction of Dangote cement into the Ghanaian market six years ago, had stabilised the prices of the commodity on account of the competitive prices they provided to the Ghanaian consumer.

Mr Nygard said:"Ghacem and Diamond cement boast of contributing to the economy of Ghana by employing a large number of Ghanaians. For almost 50 years of their operations, Ghacem and Diamond cement together employ less than 3,000 people."

He said the customers patronised their products based on quality, competitive prices, reliability of delivery and customer service and they would not allow their competitors to derail their orderly progress in that sector.

"This is where our focus is, and the market noticed the effect of our entry in the Ghanaian market resulting in a stable and even reduced price in the market. We are not participating in smear campaign about our competitors, which seems to be their main focus."

Mr Nygard said they would rather continue with their expansion programme, a virtue, he said, had urged them on to dole out $100 million in the establishment of a new grinding plant in Takoradi, expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

The Managing Director appealed to Ghanaian media to remain resolute and fair in the handling of advertisements of various cement companies, as they had gathered some information that their competitors were trying to influence the refusal of their advertisements in some media outlets.

On value addition, Mr Nygard said apart from supplying and transporting bulk cement, which required specially required silos, they also bagged cement for distribution to the market with environmental control measures to avoid fugitive emissions.

"If we do not add value, what will we be doing with over 700 workers that operate just at the plant alone," the Managing Director asked?

Mr Nygard said as the highest grade cement producer in the country, Dangote Cement would continue to ensure price stability, expand to meet growing demand, employ more people and operate within the laws of Ghana and support economic growth.

Dangote Cement Ghana Limited started operations in Ghana on February 10, 2010, as a cement bagging plant ironing bulk cement from outside the Economic Community of West African States.

Apart from the $55 million bagging plant, Dangote has also purchased 1,000 new trucks at $82 million to help in the free delivery of their products to customers throughout the country.

Why Ghanaians can't get enough of Kumkum Bhagya, Veera

It’s afternoon at a hair salon in Osu – a busy commercial area in Accra – where a group of workers have been shuttling between customers since the morning.

As the day winds to end the stylists in the salon move with a little less urgency, stealing occasional glances at the television screen above one of the large mirrors.

Veera, a popular Indian soap opera, is on, grabbing their attention with its dramatic segues, cliffhangers, tension-heightening sound accompaniments and swift closeups capturing the shocked, ecstatic and exaggerated expressions of the actors.

Veera is the second Indian imported soap opera that has been dubbed into Twi (a local dialect of the Akan language in Ghana) by the television channel Adom TV.

With families coming home after work and school to catch up on the latest episodes Adom’s two shows, Kumkum Bhagya and Veera are two of the most popular on the channel and have become part of people’s regular television watching routine, says Beatrice Ehomah, a producer at Adom.

So much so that their success has surpassed what management had expected with people watching and following them with more rigor than the local films on the channel.

“There is a lot of learning and encouragement about children and their intelligence,” one of the stylists, Grace, says of a storyline in Veera. “I like it because of that.”

Grace adds that she and her colleagues are often still working when the evening shows begin, but any moments they catch are worth it. Hannah, a trader who has a kiosk on the busy Oxford Street in Osu, also likes that there are lessons to be learned from the shows.

Latin American telenovelas first aired on Ghanaian channels in the 90s with storylines of love, betrayal and family melodramas. Over the years Ghanaians, who were typically used to their own local Kumawood and neighbouring Nigeria’s Nollywood films, took to the telenovelas from Latin America and Asia, perhaps as a result of the dramatized depictions of daily life that both offer with the added appeal of a foreign lifestyle.

Soap operas such as Juana la Virgen – the American version, Jane the Virgin, which returns on CW this week in the US – are also popular on cable television.

Esmerelda and Rosalinda proved to be instant hits and even served as an avenue for non-fluent English speakers to brush up on their English-language skills.

Even with an increasing number of television channels popping up in the country – many of which air English-dubbed telenovelas – it wasn’t until last year that one channel, Adom TV, a Twi-speaking television station, decided it was time to set themselves apart from the competition. In November the Indian soap opera Kumkum Bhagya became the first to be dubbed into Twi. Others are now following suit.

“Originally the target audience was market women,” says Ehomah. “But now we find kids singing the songs, mimicking and picking up [lines] from the novela.”

While the channel is not the only one to locally produce a local language-dubbed telenovela – Obonu TV airs a Ga-dubbed Indian show – it is the first Twi channel to do so. With the dialect spoken across the diverse country, Adom has been able to reach a wider audience.

Grace says that though she watches both the English- and Twi-dubbed shows, she prefers those that are in Twi and finds – as the local producers hoped – that more people are encouraged to watch them.

However Amelia, an accountant and regular telenovela watcher, isn’t one of those people. Instead she feels like the voiceovers and the actors are at odds with each other.

“It doesn’t interest some of us anymore,” she complains. “It becomes annoying when you’re watching it. Whoever is speaking for them ... it doesn’t really match with the scene that is going on. So it takes the fun out of it.”

She prefers instead to watch Ghanaian films in local languages. But Ehomah says she and her team are pleased with the success of the Twi telenovelas.

“Twi has this humour in it,” Ehomah explains. “When we translate it we mix it up with the funny words in Twi and it makes it more humorous. So you have the Indians ‘speaking’ Twi with all those proverbs, it’s funny,” she says. “It helps relieve stress.”

Cape Coast University develops breast cancer detection device

The Department of Chemical Pathology of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has developed a breast cancer detection device for women in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The device known as “Breast Eye” is able to detect suspicious breast lumps in women and give accurate results for screening.

Head of Department, Chemical Pathology, School of Medical Science (UCCSMS), Dr Frank Ghartey, made this known at the fourth annual Oguaa breast cancer awareness campaign week to commemorate this year’s breast cancer awareness month, which is celebrated every October.

It was organised by Breast Screening Services, a Cape Coast based non-governmental organisation (NGO), in collaboration with the Centre for Gender, Research and Advocacy at UCC, with support from Nargins Group.

The programme, which was on the theme: “Breast Cancer is Real, Get screened” was to create awareness of the disease and to sensitise women that it could be prevented with early detection.

Hundreds of women in Cape Coast were screened for breast cancer with the new device.

Dr Ghartey noted that the breast eye was a simple device with an ordinary light; which when focused under the breast, could detect the area all the blood vessels were located in the breast, and could therefore be used to screen women without side effects.

He explained that cancer could expand beyond the size of a peanut only after it had developed its own blood supply, so if one had a device that could detect blood vessels, its diagnosis would therefore be easier.

He said the Department screened women and collected data after which rigorous scientific analysis was done to help improve breast screening methods to suite women in Ghana.

Research had shown that breast cancer patients in Ghana are younger with an average age of 42 compared to their counterparts from European countries where the average age is 50.

Dr Ghartey pointed out that the use of Mammography or breast imaging that uses low dose of X-Ray, in many instances did not give too good results and sometimes a lot of false negative results were presented.

The Department, had since 2006 been working on developing new techniques where women in Ghana and the sub-region could be screened for accurate results, Dr Ghartey added.

Mrs Sarah Bucknor, Cape Coast North Parliamentary candidate for the Progressive People’s Party, (PPP) expressed the need for women to examine their breasts for early detection of unusual changes and seek prompts medical attention.

Mrs Thywill Eyra Kpe, Central Regional Director of the Department of Gender, observed that ignorance, illiteracy, superstition and poverty as some factors contributing to the spread of the disease in Ghana.
She cautioned women against spiritualising breast cancer and to seek medical attention.

Dr Frank Ghartey, Dr. Akwasi Anyanful, a senior lecturer at UCCSMS, Mrs Sarah Bucknor Mrs Thywill Eyra Kpe together with other prominent personalities, led an awareness walk through the principal streets of Cape Coast.
