Chelsea to set new club record with win over Bournemouth

Chelsea to set new club record with win over Bournemouth

Chelsea will set a new club record with 12 straight Premier League victories if they can find a way past Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth tomorrow.

The current crop matched the best winning streak in the club’s history against Crystal Palace on Saturday and will now have their sights set on Arsenal’s Premier League record.

Arsenal aim to bounce back against West Brom

Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions have taken a big hit during the run up to Christmas, with a midweek defeat at Everton being followed by a loss at Manchester City but Arsene Wenger’s side are tipped to make a comeback against West Brom at the Emirates tomorrow.

The loss to Everton ended their 14 match unbeaten streak in the Premier League, and with Chelsea in such scintillating form Arsenal now find themselves in 4th position and nine points adrift of the leaders, despite enjoying an overall excellent season.

Mourinho has finally found Pogba solution – Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand feels Jose Mourinho

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand feels Jose Mourinho has finally found a formation to get the best out of Paul Pogba.

The France international initially struggled to live up to the high expectations at Old Trafford following his world record move from Juventus, but he has thrived in recent weeks as United have gone 10 games unbeaten.

Committing suicide was heavily on my mind – Eboue

Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Eboue

Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Eboue has admitted that his struggle to cope with his year-long ban from football has driven him to consider suicide.

The Ivory Coast international is serving a one-year suspension from football imposed by FIFA as part of a dispute with an agent over an unpaid debt.

Eboue’s contract at Sunderland was cancelled after FIFA awarded in favour of Sebastien Boisseau, who claims he is owed a fee reportedly close to £1million for his part in the defender’s transfer to Galatasaray from Arsenal in 2011.

“There are a lot of days when I don’t feel like getting out of bed,” he told The Daily Telegraph. “One day I wanted to kill myself. My family keep me strong, it’s them that I have to think about but if I was alone, I worry about what I’d have done to myself by now.

Ronaldo hat-trick wins Club World Cup for Real

Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick seals extra-time win for Real Madrid against Kashima Antlers in final - Club World Cup 2016
Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick seals extra-time win for Real Madrid against Kashima Antlers in final - Club World Cup 2016
Cristi.ano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid survived a scare to beat Japanese side Kashima Antlers in extra time and win the Club World Cup.

Real took the lead in the ninth minute through Karim Benzema, but Gaku Shibasaki scored either side of half-time to put Kashima in front.

Ronaldo leveled from the penalty spot on the hour mark after Lucas Vazquez was fouled by Shuto Yamamoto.

The Ballon d’Or winner then put his side ahead in extra time after being played through by Benzema, and completed his hat-trick seven minutes later.

Victory gave Real their second Club World Cup and extended their unbeaten run to 37 games in all competitions.

It also means nine of the past 10 winners of the competition have come from Europe.

The Champions League winners looked set for a comfortable afternoon when Benzema put them ahead, and they dominated possession in the opening stages.

But Kashima - the first Japanese team to reach a Club World Cup final - impressed in an entertaining game, and Shibasaki took both goals well.

Indeed, after Ronaldo’s equalising penalty, Kashima had the better chances late in normal time. First Keylor Navas saved a long-range strike from Fabricio, then Yasushi Endo shot wide at the back post with the final kick of the 90 minutes. At 3-2 down, Yuma Suzuki hit the bar with a header.

The Japanese side also felt Real captain Sergio Ramos should have been sent off in normal time when he appeared to body-check an opponent when on a yellow card.

Referees used video replays to review several decisions during the competition, but Janny Sikazwe chose not take a second look at this incident.

Victory for Ronaldo capped an impressive year for the forward, coming six days after he won the Ballon d’Or, awarded to the world’s best player.

City stun Arsenal in comeback to go second

City stun Arsenal in comeback to go second

Manchester City came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium yesterday and move to second place above their opponents in the Premier League standings.

The visitors had deservedly led at the break thanks to Theo Walcott’s early strike, only to throw away their advantage for the second match in a row.

Leroy Sane brought City level straight after half-time, before Raheem Sterling won the game with a goal 19 minutes from time.

As a result, the home team have jumped up to second in the table, albeit still seven points behind pace-setters Chelsea, while the Gunners have dropped to fourth.

Arsenal opted to stiffen up their midfield by bringing in Alex Iwobi for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the one alteration from the team that suffered their first away defeat of the season at Everton on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, City made two changes from the side that beat Watford 2-0 in midweek, Fernando replacing Ilkay Gundogan, who suffered a serious knee injury in that game, and Leroy Sane coming in for Nolito.

However, for the first time this season, Pep Guardiola kept the same back five for two league games in a row after their shut-out against the Hornets, meaning John Stones had to once again settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench.

That continuity in defence made little difference, though, as Arsenal opened the scoring just five minutes in after a quick-fire move that took just 16 seconds to go from back to front. Petr Cech started the move by rolling the ball out to Hector Bellerin, who strode forward unchallenged into the City half before finding Alexis Sanchez.

The Chile international’s brilliant reverse pass then picked out Walcott’s run in the box, with the forward making no mistake to score his 11th goal in all competitions this campaign, and his fourth in his last four games against City.

However, that lead was very nearly wiped out within minutes as City worked the ball out wide to Kevin De Bruyne and the Belgian’s brilliant cross from the left was somehow headed wide of the gaping goal by Sterling, playing the lone front role in place of the suspended Sergio Aguero.

Incredibly, it took the home team until the final minute of the first half to have their first effort on target, a Yaya Toure header straight at Cech, as the Gunners looked to produce a repeat performance to when they won 2-0 at City in January 2015.

But all the visitors’ good work in the first half was soon forgotten as City drew level two minutes after the interval as the Gunners went a 12th game in a row without keeping a clean sheet.

Barcelona set to close gap on leaders Real Madrid

Barcelona set to close gap on leaders Real Madrid
Barcelona set to close gap on leaders Real Madrid
Barcelona will have to end Espanyol’s 10-game unbeaten run if the Spanish champions are to close to within three points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid in today’s Catalan derby.

Barca have the chance to end the year within striking distance of their rivals with Madrid not in Liga action due to their participation in the Club World Cup in Japan.

However, they will confronted by an Espanyol side that have conceded in just two of their last nine league outings to shoot up the table and to within just four points of the Champions League places.

Barca boss Luis Enrique will at least have the rare luxury this season of counting on a fully-fit squad as Neymar returns from suspension after missing the comfortable 3-0 win at Osasuna last weekend.

“In the past two or three games the team has improved and got back to feeling positive,” said captain Andres Iniesta, whose comeback from a six-week injury layoff has coincided with Barca’s return to form.

“We have to continue that into the two games we have to end the year.”

Barca also received a welcome boost on Thursday as Luis Suarez extended his contract with the club until 2021.

Luis Enrique’s men had the unwelcome distraction of fulfilling a friendly commitment in Qatar in midweek, but Lionel Messi, Suarez and Neymar were all on target in a 5-3 win over Saudi champions Al-Ahli.

Barca have not lost to Espanyol since 2009 and have outscored them by 19 to one in their last five league meetings at the Nou Camp, but midfielder David Lopez believes his side are ready to make their mark on the derby again.

“It’s been a long time since we last beat them but now is a good time because the team has realised we’re capable of great things,” Lopez said. “We’re on form and feeling confident and we need to take advantage of that.”

Mikel edging closer to China move

Reports that Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi is set to move to China are credible according to some insiders at the London Club. If the move goes through, the player will be joining his team mate, Oscar in the Far East, come January.

The Nigerian has failed to make a single appearance this season for the Blues, as new manager Antonio Conte consistently overlooks him in his new 3-4-3 formation.

With Oscar set to make a sensational £52 million move to Shanghai SIPG, it’s reported that two Chinese clubs are looking at signing Mikel. Chelsea are yet to offer their veteran a new deal, with his current deal set to expire after this season.

The central midfielder has been at Stamford Bridge since 2006, and has made 374 appearances for the West London side, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the Europa League and the Champions League.

Last season Mikel established himself as an important player, and cemented his position in the starting eleven when Guus Hiddink took charge. But Conte has taken a blind side to his abilities, there are other stories that Ligue 1 giants Marseille are also rumoured to be interested.

Conte has revealed he has no plans to let the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist leave in January, but has conceded that a new deal is unlikely. Chelsea sits top of the Premier League, winning their last eleven matches as they chase down Arsenal’s record of 14 straight league wins.

Arsenal draw Bayern, Barcelona get PSG

Arsenal draw Bayern, Barcelona get PSG

Arsenal were once again drawn against Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League yesterday, while Barcelona will also come up against familiar foes in the shape of Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsene Wenger’s side had hoped winning their group for the first time in five years would spare them a tie against one of the continent’s giants in the first knockout round, but instead they must face Carlo Ancelotti’s German champions, who came second in their section, with the first leg in Bavaria.

Bayern eliminated Arsenal en route to winning the trophy in 2012/13 and repeated the feat a year later, while the teams also met in the group stage last season - the Gunners won 2-0 in London but then lost 5-1 at the Allianz Arena.

“It’s an interesting and difficult draw. We know Arsenal from the last few years when we often played against them, twice already in the last 16, when we had a good experience and got through,” said Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

“Arsenal are a strong team and I rate them as stronger at the moment than in the last few years.”

PSG came second to Arsenal in Group A, leaving them more vulnerable to a tough draw and five-time winners Barcelona have eliminated the French club in the quarter-finals in two of the past four seasons, while the teams also met in the group stage in 2014/15.

Arsenal draw Bayern, Barcelona get PSG

Recent history favours the Catalans, and so does current form, with Unai Emery’s side having squandered the chance to top their group by drawing at home to Ludogorets of Bulgaria last week.

“If I could have chosen another team, I would have done,” admitted Paris director of football Patrick Kluivert, a former Barcelona striker.

Barcelona vice president Jordi Mestre told beIN Sports Spain: “It is true that of the (possible) options Bayern Munich was possibly the strongest, with respect to the rest, but PSG are also a great team.

“There is no guarantee but it does give you a certain confidence to have beaten them before. Every game is different and we will see what happens.”

Mahrez, 25, told BBC Sport: “It means a lot, it’s something big for African players so I am very happy, I am very proud.

Mikel will leave Chelsea in January — Rohr

Mikel will leave Chelsea in January — Rohr

Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel is to leave Chelsea Football Club in January, according to Super Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr.

Mr. Rohr told newsmen in London on Friday that the Chelsea forward had to leave the club because “he cannot stay in a club he is not playing”.

“He is moving come January transfer window. He cannot stay in a club he is not playing. So he has to move,” Rohr said, adding that some Super Eagles players who are not playing at their clubs may also leave the clubs.

Mr. Rohr spoke shortly after a meeting with Nike officials in London in connection with Super Eagles official kits. The meeting was also attended by NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, Mikel Obi and Eagles centre forward, Odion Ighalo, among others.

He expressed delight at the sample of Eagles new kits presented by Nike, saying that they were “very professional”. He, however, said the Eagles New Jerseys should be light blue to ensure visibility of the players and light in texture in view of the hot weather in Africa.

The Super Eagles manager said he paid a “private” visit to Eagles goal keeper, Carl Ikeme in Wolverhampton to wish him a quick recovery from his injuries.

Ronaldo wins fourth Ballon d’Or award

Ronaldo wins fourth Ballon d’Or award

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for a fourth time.

Ronaldo, 31, helped Real Madrid win last season’s Champions League and scored three goals as Portugal won Euro 2016.

It adds to the titles he won in 2008, 2013 and 2014.

Ronaldo is now one behind Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, who received the honour in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.

The former Manchester United forward has scored 19 goals in 20 games for club and country this term, to add to the 54 he got last season.

The Ballon d’Or is given to the best Europe-based player as voted by 173 journalists from around the world.

It has been awarded by France Football every year since 1956, but for the past six years it became the FIFA Ballon d’Or in association with world football’s governing body.

However, FIFA ended its association with the award in September.

FIFA will hand out its own prize for the world’s best men’s player, along with the best women’s player and team of the year, at the Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony in Zurich on 9 January.

Costa strikes Chelsea back to top

Chelsea moved back to the top of the Premier League and made it nine successive league wins as Diego Costa scored the winner against a stubborn West Brom at Stamford Bridge.

The Spain striker took advantage of a mistake by a hesitant Gareth McAuley in the 76th minute to rob the defender of possession and curl a brilliant left-foot shot past Ben Foster.

West Brom had looked like earning a point after restricting the Blues to just one other shot on target, a 30-yard David Luiz free-kick.

Chelsea also came close through an N’Golo Kante shot that deflected off Pedro and rolled just wide of the post.

CAF Awards: Iheanacho, Iwobi, Omagbemi, Oshoala Top Nominees

CAF Awards: Iheanacho, Iwobi, Omagbemi, Oshoala Top Nominees

Nigeria’s quartet of Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi, Asisat Oshoala and Super Falcons’ handler Florence Omagbemi were among those nominated for honours at the Glo-CAF African Football Awards taking place in Abuja on 5th January 2017.

Although none of her players made the final cut for the Africa Player of the Year and Africa-based Player of the Year nominations, Nigeria made bold presence in the other categories released yesterday.

In a release by the Confederation of African Football, Oshoala was listed alongside South African Janine Van Wyk, Ghanaian Elizabeth Addo and Cameroonians Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene and Raissa Feudjio Tchuanyo for the Women’s Player of the Year.

Oshoala won the award in 2014, alongside being named Youth Player of the Year. Cameroonian Gaelle Deborah Enganamouit was named Women’s Player of the Year 2015.

In the category of Most Promising Talent, Manchester City of England ace Kelechi Iheanacho is listed with fellow Nigerian Oghenekaro Etebo, Guinean Naby Keita, Elia Meshack of DR Congo and Ramadan Soby of Egypt.

Iheanacho scored in four consecutive matches for the Super Eagles against Mali, Luxembourg, Tanzania and Zambia, and has been impressive for his English top tier club, for whom he scored in the UEFA Champions League last week. Etebo was the hero of Nigeria’s bronze medal feat at the Olympics in Brazil, scoring four goals in the 5-4 thumping of Japan.

The Youth Player of the Year list was headed by Arsenal of England star Alex Iwobi, who scored Nigeria’s first goal of the 2018 FIFA World Cup race, away to Zambia in Ndola in October. He contests with Ghanaians Eric Ayiah and Sandra Owusu-Ansah, Ivorian Franck Kessie and Mali U-20 ace Sidiki Maiga.

Florence Omagbemi, the only person to have won the Women Africa Cup of Nations as captain and coach, contests for Coach of the Year with DR Congo’s Florent Ibenge, Uganda Coach Milutin Sredojevic, Nacer Sandjak of CAF Confederation Cup winners MO Bejaia and Pitso Mosimane of CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will battle for Women’s Team of the Year with Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, while Nigeria’s U-23 team, bronze winners at the Olympics, will tug with DR Congo (CHAN winners), Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Uganda (the last two for qualifying for 2017 AFCON). Guinea Bissau are making their debut while Uganda are back among the elites of African football after 38 years.

Sundowns, Bejaia, TP Mazembe, Zamalek and Zesco United compete for Club of the Year, while Gambian Papa Gassama, Egyptian Ghead Grisha and Senegalese Malang Diedhiou are in the race for Referee of the Year. Incidentally, Gassama handled the Nigeria/Algeria 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo while Grisha was in charge of the first qualifying match away to Zambia in Ndola.

Mourinho demands more goals from Rooney

Jose Mourinho has warned captain Wayne Rooney and Manchester United’s other goal-shy forwards that they must start doing more to lift the burden on Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Rooney has scored just three goals in 20 matches across all competitions this season and failed to add to his tally in Thursday’s Europa League contest against Zorya, which United won 2-0.

United have just 19 Premier League goals this season, with Ibrahimovic scoring eight of those, fewer than any other team in the top seven.

Red Devils manager Mourinho wants a better return from Rooney, who needs just one more goal to equal Bobby Charlton’s all-time goalscoring record at United, but says the onus is not just on the England skipper.

“As an attacking player, normally Rooney scores more goals,” Mourinho told reporters.

Table toppers Chelsea tackle West Brom

Chelsea host West Brom in the Premier League in today’s early kick off with the Blues will looking to continue their fantastic run of form with another routine win at home.

Chelsea are three points clear at the top of the table and considering their recent form, they should be able to add to their eight-match winning run. Furthermore, the Blues have done very well against West Brom over the last few seasons and will be confident heading into the game.

Antonio Conte could be without some of his key players for this weekend’s game. Costa and Pedro are major doubts after picking up injuries against City. Matic is expected to be sidelined after missing last week’s clash and John Terry is also recovering from his injury.

West Brom are heading into this game on the back of three wins in their last four league games and the Baggies will fancy their chances of an upset here.

Tony Pulis’s men will look to dig deep with their defensive approach and frustrate the home side. West Brom have been tough to beat recently and if Costa and Pedro miss the game, it will be a massive boost for the away side.

Boaz Myhill and Saido Berahino are ruled out for the away side.

Key stats

Chelsea have won their last 8 matches in the Premier League.

Chelsea are undefeated in their last 10 home matches against West Brom in all competitions.

Chelsea have scored at least 2 goals in 7 of their last 8 matches in the Premier League.

Arsenal's Arsene Wenger: 'I want Giroud to extend his contract'

Olivier Giroud
Olivier Giroud
Arsene Wenger is adamant he wants to keep Olivier Giroud at Arsenal next season, but admitted he can't keep all of his forwards happy after Alexis Sanchez emerged as his first-choice striker.

Giroud has been mainly used as a substitute this season after Sanchez took advantage of his absence at the start of the campaign to transform from a winger into a top-class striker. The Chilean has 11 Premier League goals already, while Giroud has been effective in his new role, coming off the bench to score crucial goals against Sunderland and Manchester United.

Giroud has said he wants to stay and fight for his place this season before assessing his options in the summer, when he will only have one year left on his contract.

And Wenger said he hopes the Frenchman will agree to stay at the Emirates for the long haul.

"We are in a world where you have to know where you want to be and in my case I want Giroud to stay, I want Giroud to extend his contract," Wenger said ahead of Saturday's game against Stoke. "After, he has to live with the competition, and for me he is a very important player at the club, on the pitch and off the pitch. I want him to stay, he has to decide if he can live with what is going on but personally I like Giroud very much."

With summer signing Lucas Perez also impressing with a hat trick in the Champions League on Tuesday and Danny Welbeck set to return from a knee injury next month, Wenger now has a wealth of attacking options to choose from. It's an unusual situation for Wenger, who was criticised during the last few years for relying too much on Giroud up front. Now he's facing questions about what he will do with all his forwards.

"If you have only one striker, the press says 'why don't you buy another striker?' Once you buy one more they say 'how can you keep him happy?" the Arsenal boss lamented. "You cannot keep them all happy but our job is, we produce every weekend unhappy people. It's part of the job at every club. At Stoke on Saturday only 11 will start. Look at every squad in the Premier League, everybody has internationals on the bench."

The problem for Giroud is that Sanchez has become more or less undroppable after netting 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions so far. He is the joint top scorer in the Premier League with 11 goals from 14 games, helping the Gunners climb into second place in the standings with his hat trick at West Ham last weekend.AP Photo/Alastair Grant

Wenger acknowledged, however, that he had almost given up on the idea of turning Sanchez into a central striker before this season, and admitted that the switch may never have happened if it wasn't for Giroud's absence.

Wenger still remembers Arsenal's game at Everton in 2014, when he started the Chilean up front but hauled him off at half-time with the Gunners trailing 2-0. Olivier Giroud came on instead and levelled for Arsenal in the 90th minute, convincing Wenger to shelve the Sanchez experiment.

"You see the guy who plays wide and can score goals, [and think] that he can in the centre score even more goals," Wenger said. "I always saw [that potential] in Sanchez and I must honestly say I thought many times when I played him last year or two years ago I was wrong. Because the few experiences I attempted with him through the middle were not convincing and I remember even in one game [at Everton] I changed it at half-time. This year it clicked very early in the season."

Giroud wasn't match fit at the start of the season and Wenger had yet to bring in Perez from Deportiva La Coruna. That meant Sanchez was given a run of games in the position, even though he went scoreless from two unimpressive performances in the opening two games of the campaign.

"He took advantage of the fact Giroud was not here and not ready, so I could give him more games," Wenger said. "Sometimes when you have too many people you cannot [continue] an experiment that is not immediately conclusive, because you are under pressure. If it doesn't work in one or two games and you have a top player on the bench, you're tempted very early to change it."

And at times this season, Wenger has reverted back to playing Giroud up front with Sanchez on the wing, a formation that will likely be seen a few more times depending on the opposition. And the Arsenal boss insisted that Sanchez doesn't have a problem with going back to his old position.

"Sanchez was happy out wide because in his head he was a wide player," Wenger said. "Today it would be more difficult maybe for him to [play there], but when I do it I must say honestly it was not a problem. He accepts it very well."

Victor Moses beats Aguero, Anichebe to Premier League Award
Nigeria international, Victor Moses, has been voted as the PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month for November.

Moses’ emergence as the top gun is not surprising following his consistent and commendable performances for the Blues in recent times.

For two consecutive games, the Nigerian star scooped the Man of the Match award for Chelsea.

The former Wigan star beat competition from another Nigerian player, Victor Anichebe, who scored three goals in the month under consideration.

Moses also garnered more votes compared to Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, West Brom winger Matt Phillips, Watford’s Nordin Amrabat, and Swansea star Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Moses has seamlessly fit into Coach Antonio Conte’s deployment of the 3-4-3 formation.

His pace, poise and guile has not just marvelled many, but his performances have equally delivered results.

The award is voted for by fans on the Sky Sports website and a good motivation for Moses ahead of the weekend showdown against Manchester City.
