Marshalls is pleased to announce that Dr. Benony Kortatsi is the college’s new president. The Board of Governors of Marshalls, presided over by Prof DEK Amenumey, appointed Dr. Kortatsi to succeed Dr. Tetteh Netteh, who now becomes the Group President of the Meridian-Marshalls Holdings.
Dr. Kortatsi, upon resuming office in June, promised to build upon the strong foundations that Dr. Nettey had started. He noted that he had first taken knowledge of Marshalls, having been particularly impressed with the institution’s achievements in sport and in IT particularly e-learning application. He pledged to deepen the gains the College has already made, resolving to invest in the area of self-development and a learner-friendly environment for both the students and lecturers.
Dr. Kortatsi has a long history of contributing to academia and has imparted knowledge to younger people on academic-related matters in various capacities. After completing a first degree in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Ghana, he taught at the Keta Secondary School for his National service. He has also taught at the Accra Worker’s College (now Accra City Campus of University of Ghana).He was part-time teaching assistant at the Physics Department of the University of Ghana for Medical students. After obtaining MSC in Hydrogeology from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, he returned to Ghana in 1983. While working as a research scientist at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, he was also a part-time lecturer at the Geology department of the University of Ghana while also carrying out research with the Soil Science Department of the faculty of Agriculture, University of Ghana. Additionally, Dr Benony Kortatsi supervised MSc and PhD projects from four different universities namely University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Cape Coast University and Institute of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (GAEC).
He was one time the external examiner for MSc. Geophysics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. He has more than 50 peer reviewed journal and conference papers to his credit. Dr Kortatsi also reviewed more than 50 articles for both local and external journals.
Outside of academia, Dr. Benony Kortatsi is also well-known for his work leading to providing good drinking water to several remote parts of Ghana when he was as the coordinator and consultant for the Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research [CSIR]. Indeed he participated in all major projects for water supply to rural and semi urban communities in Ghana as a project coordinator or consultant. He was Chief Research Scientist (Equivalent of a full University Professor) at the CSIR before being seconded to the Ministry of Environment Science and Technology to take up the position of the Director of Science, Technology and Innovation. He was from 2006-2012 the president of the local branch of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG)
The newly-appointed president is expected to spearhead the processes for the expansion of the Marshalls School of Technology. The faculty is expected to become the Marshalls School of Science and Technology after the processes and formalities for providing Science-oriented programs at Marshalls are completed. Already, he has begun work on restructuring the administrative system and attempts to upgrade faculties will soon follow.
The founder and Group President of the Meridian-Marshalls Holdings, Dr. Tetteh Nettey, took the opportunity to welcome the new president of Marshalls and thanked all within the Marshalls community for their support and hard work during his tenure as president. He expressed upbeat about the fortunes of Marshalls under the stewardship of the current president, Dr. Benony Kortatsi, citing that his experience and track record will propel Marshalls towards the realization of Ivy League status.
Dr. Tetteh Nettey was Marshalls’ first president, having assumed the office after the institution he founded was accredited in 2013. During his short tenure, Marshalls became only the second academic institution in all of Africa to be listed on the Stock Exchange. He also championed the adoption of the UNESCO standards of teaching and learning at Marshalls and completed a six-storey state-of-the-art learning facility, christened the DEK Amenumey building in honour of the College’s first Board Chairman. Dr. Nettey was also invited to speak at the Adobe World Championships as Microsoft and other giants in ICT recognized Marshalls’ contributions to the field in Africa.
It should be recalled that students of the Marshalls School of Technology have developed nine mobile applications, two of them under the recommendation of the United Nations. In the field of sport, Dr. Nettey’s tenure ended with Marshalls as reigning Basketball Champions of the PUSAG Games. PUSAG is abbreviation for Private University Students Association of Ghana.
Dr. Kortatsi has rightly noted that even though Marshalls has made significant strides, there is still room for improvement. The new Marshalls president is positive that under his leadership, the college will build on past accomplishments, add to its list of achievements and actively invest in the development of its human resources and infrastructure in order to progressively realize the goal of attaining Ivy League status. Marshalls is Ghana’s leading academic institution for Hospitality and Tourism. The college offers round-the-clock certification programmes under the umbrella of its four faculties; the School of Arts and Social Sciences, the J.S. Addo Business School, the School of Technology and the School of Modern Languages.
