Here are some English words that are popular among Ghanaians although they cannot be found in the dictionary.

1. Night Vigil

The correct expression is “vigil”, which is a period of keeping awake during the time usually spent asleep, especially to keep watch or pray.

2. Wake-Keeping

The correct expression is “wake”. It means a watch or vigil held beside the body of someone who has died, sometimes accompanied by ritual observances.

3. Disvirgin

It is used to mean that a lady’s virginity has been taken away. The right word is “deflower”.

4. Go-slow



The correct word is “traffic”, which means the movement of vehicles along a route.

5. Plumby

Ghanaians use “plumpy” when they want to say that someone is chubby. The correct expression is plump.
