| Regent Hosts Blood Donation Drive |
The Blood Donation Drive was organized by the School of Informatics, Engineering and Technology (SIET) in collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Service. The exercise formed part of events to celebrate SIET Week, slated for March 2016.
In all, about 45 pints of blood was voluntarily donated to help replenish the stock level at the Blood Bank of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
According to the National Blood Service, an agency under the Ministry of Health; out of the 250,000 pints of blood needed by patients yearly, only 66% is normally donated and stored.
It is in this context, that the blood donation exercise was organized to help in addressing this growing need.
“It was quite successful”, said Dylis Dickson, a Regent staff volunteer who helped organize the event.
“We hope to organize another drive in January so that a wider segment of the University community can be part of it”, said Dylis.
Dr. Peter Narh, a Regent staff member and donor shared his experience at the blood donation drive: “It was worth the call. Paramedics were smart and friendly and made the whole blood donation exercise a great experience”, said Dr. Narh.
He added: “It is really fulfilling knowing that your contribution would save the life of another.”
