I’m still NUGS president – Paa Quecy Adu fights back

The president of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Paa Quecy Adu has declared he is still in office and has not resigned as reported.

The National Executive Committee of NUGS in a statement Thursday said it has reached a decision to “set aside its president Paa Quecy Adu” over two court cases challenging his legitimacy.

The committee took the decision at its 2nd National Executive Committee meeting.

But the embattled president insists the decision is illegal. Speaking to Starr News’ Ibrahim Alhassan, Adu alleged the general secretary and other executives are pursuing a political agenda against him.

“I was not their favourite candidate. Their candidate lost the elections so they are finding it difficult to accept the defeat,” he stated. “The NEC has a limited power. NEC does not have the power to determine whether the president should step aside or not. I’m not accountable to them. I’m accountable to central committee and congress.”

Adu is threatening legal action against the executives who met to issue a statement announcing his dismissal.

“First of all, I have to let the students of Ghana know that that is not true and this is a criminal act. It’s fraudulent so it will be necessary that I take a legal action against them because they have used a letter head of the union to issue a statement without my consent.”

Adu’s legitimacy to the NUGS presidency is being fiercely contested in two different cases by two different members of NUGS on the grounds of qualification. The two cases are being heard in an Accra High Court and a Madina magistrate court.
