Ghana Tertiary Awards celebrates ‘campus celebrities’

Ghana Tertiary Awards
They are mostly regarded as “campus celebrities’ and come Friday, October 21, students in the various tertiary institutions across the country impacting the society with their talents and skills will be celebrated at this year’s Ghana Tertiary Awards (GTA) scheduled for the National Theatre.

A students’ awards festival, the GTA is the first and only scheme in Africa which gives awards to tertiary students. It is also aimed at correcting the wrong perception that tertiary education isn’t productive.

In a chat with the Daily Graphic, Mr Richmond Amofa Sarpong, organiser of the event, said this year promised to be bigger.

“There has been an addition of 10 categories to the existing 25. They are Most Influential Student Poet, Most Influential Foreign Student, Most Influential Physically Challenged Student, and Most Influential Student Graphic Designer,” he said.

The others are Most Influential Student Comedian, Most Influential Student MC (Male and Female) and the Tertiary Star Role Model which has Shatta Wale, Yvonne Nelson, John Dumelo, Akuma Mama Zimbi, M.anifest, Sarkodie, Emelia Brobbey and Asamoah Gyan competing.

According to him, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Nathan Kwabena Anokye Adisi, popularly known as Bola Ray, for his tremendous contribution in the media.

On the selection of the nominees, Mr Amofa said “the nominee has to be a continuing student whose influence in school is quite evident”.

The nominees were selected from the various State/Government tertiary institutions in the country. They are University of Ghana, University of Professional studies, Ghana Institute of Journalism, Accra Polytechnic, BlueCrest University, Wisconsin University College, Jayee University, and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The others are Yeshua Institute of Technology, National Film and Television Institute, Kumasi Polytechnic, University of Cape Coast, Central University College, University for Development Studies, Methodist University College, Regent University, African University of Communication College, Valley View University, Pentecost University College, Takoradi Polytechnic, Koforidua Polytechnic, University of Education Winneba, Ghana Technology College, among other institutions.

Mr Amofa pledged his outfit’s commitment to support any presidential candidate who has realistic policies which project the interest of the youth.
