The IUCG and the National Chief Imam signed a Memorandum of Understanding [MOU] to cooperate on educational, research, religious and cultural affairs.

The purpose of the MOU includes “promoting education among Muslims in Ghana at the tertiary level, including the grant of scholarship to brilliant but needy students through the National Chief Imam; Cooperation on Research especially on topics that affect Muslims in Ghana; Cooperation on the promotion of Religious and Cultural Affairs through training seminars and workshops,” as contained in the document signed.

The National Chief Imam, for his part, “will help the IUCG realize its vision and mission; create avenues for IUCG students and graduates to be able to engage meaningfully in the development of Islam and Muslims in Ghana; and create special opportunities for Muslim graduates, especially IUCG graduates,” the MOU reads.

Knowing full well the importance of research to solving problems the parties further agree to cooperate in undertaking research into topics that are relevant and beneficial to the Muslim Ummah. In furtherance of the above objective, “the National Chief Imam agrees to take interest in research and make it a foundation for solving many of the problems facing Muslims and to use his good Office to access funds, to be used as initial funding for research into issues affecting Muslims” while the IUCG agrees to provide “the necessary human resource required for any such research, provide its facilities for research conferences and seminars and contribute to the publishing and distribution of the research works.”

Well aware of the need to take stock of one’s activities and make necessary modifications, refresh one’s knowledge of things and share experiences and learn from one another the parties also resolved “to hold common cultural, Qur’anic and research Olympiads and competitions; to exchange information and experience on issues affecting Muslims; to involve each other on issues relating to the welfare of Muslims in Ghana and elsewhere; to facilitate inter-religious dialogues.”

Speaking at the signing ceremony on Saturday April 25, 2015, the Personal Assistant of the National Chief Imam, Mr. Khuzaima M. Osman expressed gratitude to the management of the IUCG for accepting to grant scholarship to needy students who fall on the National Chief Imam for assistance. He said even though many students are already benefiting from the scholarship scheme of the IUCG, the ceremony was to formalize this relationship to enhance better cooperation.

“Already, ten (10) persons under the auspices of the National Chief Imam are benefiting from the IUCG scholarship. We however, requested increment in the number of beneficiaries and we are grateful that the management of IUCG has accepted our request,” Mr. Khuzaima said.

The Supreme leader of Muslims in Ghana, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu commended IUCG and the government and people of Iran for promoting the wellbeing of Muslims and attaching special significance to their relationship with him. He expressed hope that the agreement would bear fruit as soon as possible.

“As I always say, you have Muslims at heart, you are concern about their welfare, whenever any prominent figure (scholars, politicians etc) from Iran visits you, you pay a courtesy call on me. Thus, whenever you invite me to your program, even if I am not able to honor it myself I make sure somebody represents me.” He added, “this (MOU) will make tertiary education accessible to persons who will otherwise be denied because of finance.”

In his response, the Founding President and Chairman of IUCG Council, Dr. Hakemullah Abdul-Majeed, elucidated the rationale behind signing the MOU thus: “The leadership is here today to sign this MOU with the sole aim of making better the Ghanaian Muslim situation.”

Giving the breakdown of the scholarship, Dr. Hakemullah explained that the IUCG has agreed to grant seven (7) students -each Academic Year- scholarship through the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu. Four out of the seven persons shall be students pursuing Religious Studies program, while the rest shall be for those pursuing the other programs (Business administration and Communication Studies). This is to “promote education among Muslims in Ghana, especially brilliant but needy students,” he reiterated.

Recalling his meeting with his Eminence some years ago, and the outcome of the meeting he has this to say:

“I paid you a visit in 1999 when I first came to Ghana, in our interaction you suggested the need for Muslims to have a University in Ghana, I gave it a thought and that led to the establishment of Islamic University College, Ghana.”

The Founding President of IUCG took the opportunity to commend his Eminence for his leadership, wisdom and concern for Muslims in Ghana and elsewhere. According to him it is as a result of his Eminence prayers, leadership and wisdom that Ghanaian Muslims are not facing what other countries are facing and pleaded with him to do more to ensuring Muslims and followers of other religious faiths in Ghana continue to coexist in peace, harmony and respect for one another.

He also commended the government of Ghana for its good leadership and support for IUCG, Muslims and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The signing was done by His Eminence National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu and for IUCG by Dr. Hakemullah Abdul-Majeed witnessed by Mohsen Maarefi, the President of IUCG and Mr. Khuzaima M. Osman. Other dignitaries present were the Vice President (Fin. & Adm.), Mr. Muhammad Rezaei, Mr. Awudu Moro, Mr. Yusuf Bansi and Ibrahim Sumaila Dankwabea.
