About 100 shops in the Kumasi Central Market have been engulfed by a fire outbreak that started around 9pm on Wednesday at a section of the market called Bode.

Fire personnel managed to bring the fire under control while some traders tried to rescue their wares amidst tears.

Security men at the market said the fire started in one of the shops but spread faster than they could stop it from spreading.
They said that the section of the market was where yams, live birds, sheabutter and other goods were sold.

Some market women at the scene blamed the cause of the fire outbreak on one woman who sells fried yam at the market.

They believe she might not have put out the fire properly and that could have led to the fire outbreak.

Currently fire personnel do not know the cause of the fire.

According to Graphic Online's reporter, Donald Ato Dapatem in Kumasi. 200 shops have been razed down by fire by fire.

As of 6.53am Thursday morning one could hear sounds of explosion mixed in billowing smoke.

According to fire officers, although this was not the only fire in Kumasi on Wednesday, they could not bring the fire under control due to lack of access, combustible materials and the dry winds of the harmattan.
