African first ladies task leaders on women empowerment

African first ladies have called on leaders in the continent to step up efforts toward ensuring women and youth empowerment. The President of the African First Ladies Network for Peace and wife of Nigeria’s President, Mrs Aisha Buhari gave the charge at an occasion to mark the 2016 Regional Open Day on Women, Youth, Peace and Security in Abuja. 

Represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs Adejoke Adefulire, Mrs. Buhari said when women and youth are empowered, they would be able to contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation; hence, crisis would be kept at bay. 

Also speaking, the first lady of Niger Republic, Mrs Mahamadou Issoufou Aissata said unemployment, weak purchasing power, inequality, among others, hinder peace and security of any society, while exposing the youths to social vices such as terrorism, illicit trafficking, drug abuse and various trans-border crimes.

In his speech, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, urged the authorities of the West African sub-region to implement various affirmative action and laws on women representation in leadership position they have adopted.
