For the Scottish in 1411 on July 24, it was one of the bloodiest battles ever, the Battle of Harlaw; however for the Ghanaian in 2012, on this same day, it was an upset at the nation's frontier; a death that shocked many even to the marrow : It was the sudden absence of the third president of the forth Republic, John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills.

It goes without saying that he was an illustrious son and father whose life revolved around the month of July: Born on the 21st of July, 1944, the late president John Atta Mills laid down his political gloves on the 24th of July 2012.
His sixty-eight years of existence was described by many as peaceful, gentle and loving. He was a mentor for the young visionary student-leader who prides himself or herself to the national call ; he was one of the pioneers of decent politicking in Ghana and on the continent. The late Professor Mills, insisted through his acts that there was an aorta of good in national leadership.

His Excellency's vociferousness was a burning desire for the patriotic youth especially; like how he publicly exposed corruption in diverse ways and how he counselled both the young and old to eschew unpatriotic doctrines.

It is four years since his demise, but his ideologies of patriotism and peace linger on the minds and continue to burn in the hearts countrymen.
His message of peace is even more relevant than ever as Ghana goes to the polls in December. We owe it to his memory and of course, the memories of many other leaders who held the fort, to insist on peace. Our energy as a people lies in the synergy of collectivity.

The National Union of Ghana Students commemorates this day in memory of this national hero and continental icon. The Union also uses this auspicious day to re-echo the virtues he stood for, hoping that these virtues remind politicians of the duty they owe citizens ; and citizens, the future generation hereafter.

Long live Ghana ; Long live your memory, H.E John Evans Atta Mills.
