Instilling the right character in citizens will be critical in forging a more hopeful future for the Ghana, the Founder and President of Ashesi University, Patrick Awuah has said.

Speaking on how developing the right culture could drive development, Mr. Awuah noted that character was essential to forging the right culture to ensure a better future for Ghana.
“I would say character is destiny. The character of a people determines their destiny… Really, the fundamental is what your character is. Character is your destiny,” he said on the Ghana Report on Viasat One.

Mr. Awuah explained that, “If you have the character of being able to delay gratifications, if you have the character of being able to look forward and consider the future consequences of you actions then you behave differently today and your destiny will be different because you looked forward.”

Habits influence character
The Ashesi founder also noted the role our daily habits influences the character one could develop.

“Character is formed from your daily habits and actions that you develop… When you have a habit of bribing people, that is your character. When you have a habit of demanding bribes from people, that is your character. If you have a habit of telling the truth versus telling lies, that is your character.”

Influence your circles – Awuah

Mr. Awuah, who established the Ashesi University in 2002, believes every Ghanaian has a role to play in honing a desirable culture in Ghanaian society.

“I cannot control how somebody was brought up at home but I can influence how they are educated in the institution that I run so I have to focus on that.”

“If everybody focuses within their sphere of influence, what you can do and if everybody focuses on within their sphere of influence what they can do then you can change the character of a national and the culture of a nation,” he added.
