Private universities appeal to gov’t to review accreditation process

The Private Universities Students’ Association of Ghana (PUSAG) wants the National Accreditation Board ( NAB) and government, to review accreditation processes and grant them full charter status.

This they say will lessen the financial burden on students in private universities and also allow the institutions the right to award their own degrees.

“We still pray that the government through the NAB would kindly see the light of partnership and help our member institutions, I mean deserving ones, get their charter status,” he said.
According to the President of PUSAG, Richard Odame, the measures put in place by government in the educational system mostly favors the public schools, adding that the private students are often ignored and unfairly treated.

Currently, Central University and Asheshi University have requested to be given charter status which is pending approval by the National Accreditation Board. According to PUSAG, no private university has secured Presidential Charter in the last 13 years.

Mr. Odame thus pleaded with government and the NAB to reconsider their decision saying, “PUSAG is humbly pleading with the government, particularly the ministry of education and its agencies to reconsider levies which are directly or indirectly captured in our fees government supports the fact that education is a right.”
