The Corporate Social Investment (CSI) arm of MTN Ghana, the MTN Ghana Foundation, has undertaken far-reaching CSI initiatives in the country, investing over GH¢21.5 million to improve health care, education and living conditions for approximately three million people.
Since its establishment in 2007, the foundation has executed 102 major projects, as well as numerous smaller initiatives in diverse communities to brighten lives in all 10 regions of Ghana.
Health is one of three focus areas of the foundation, and its project selection criteria is aligned to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and should reflect the real needs of the community.In the eight years it has been in existence, the MTN Ghana Foundation has constructed hospital blocks, Community-based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) compounds, undertaken the refurbishment of hospitals and wards.
The foundation has also been very helpful in the provision of critical medical equipment and has provided potable water for communities by funding the drilling of boreholes.
Access
Improved access to quality health has been a key area of focus for the MTN Ghana Foundation. In this vein, MTN has provided potable water for 22 communities by funding the drilling of boreholes, thereby helping to prevent diseases.
With particular interest in women and children, the foundation has built or refurbished hospital wards for maternity, paediatric and emergency care and equipped health facilities with critical medical equipment. Several health institutions in Ghana have benefited from MTN’s health-related interventions, while CHPS compounds have been built with funding from the foundation.Critical surgeries for numerous patients with varying health conditions such as, hole in heart, burn survivors, among others have been performed through the foundation’s intervention.
Surgeries
In addition, the foundation partnered Ghana Cleft Foundation to assist 74 patients with cleft disorders to receive free surgeries, while 116 health professionals were trained in the management of cleft lip and palate disorders.
Ghanaians requiring blood transfusion have unknowingly benefited from the foundation’s activities due to annual blood donation exercises that have contributed 2,038 pints of blood to the National Blood Bank and other health institutions. Recently, the foundation constructed a neonatal care unit for the Tamale Teaching Hospital at a cost of GH¢335,000 to improve the chances for survival for preterm babies delivered at the hospital.
Investment
The foundation has invested more than GH¢ six million in 32 major health projects that impacts on approximately one million Ghanaians directly.
In 2009, MTN Ghana Foundation approved $600,000 for the refurbishment of the second floor of the Korle Bu Maternity Ward during which 11 delivery rooms, a theatre and a recovery ward, doctors' restroom, and a changing room were refurbished. The project has been the Health flagship project of the MTN Ghana Foundation and it is important that it is supported from time to time.
The foundation recently donated equipment worth over GH¢129,000 to the Maternity Block of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The hospital is one of the biggest in the West African sub-region receiving referral cases from almost all countries in the region.
With the donation to the Maternity Block of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the MTN Ghana Foundation presented eight Mobile Examination Lamps, radiant warmers,12 instrument trolleys, six multifunction delivery beds and suction machines
The MTN Ghana foundation recognises the need to implement effective projects to improve the quality and safety of health care delivery across the country. The foundation maintains the hope that its initiatives will strengthen and deepen the collective efforts of key stakeholders who are working towards a healthy nation.
Context
The MTN Ghana Foundation was established by the MTN Group Board as the vehicle for effectively administering MTN’s Corporate Social Responsibility contributions. The MTN Ghana Foundation is funded by a percentage of profit after tax (PAT) from MTN Ghana. The objective of the foundation is to contribute to the socio-economic development of Ghana by improving access to education and health care, and promoting economic empowerment.
Since its establishment in November 2007, the MTN Ghana Foundation has funded more than 102 projects, including the construction or refurbishment of hospital wards and school blocks and providing business training and initial capital for the economically disadvantaged.
Key projects include the refurbishment of the 2nd floor of the Maternity block of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and establishment of 10 MTN ICT Learning Centres in all regions of Ghana.
