Ghana scored the second most corrupt on the entire continent, in the corruption perception index released by Transparency International. South Africa was the worst, with Nigeria following closely on the heels of their West African siblings.
Transparency International partnered with Afrobarometer to survey respondents across the continent to create the index. They surveyed 43,143 respondents across 28 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa on their perception and experiences of corruption, between March 2014 and September 2015.
58% of respondents agreed that corruption has increased on the continent within the past year.
As for institutions, you wouldn’t be surprised to learn the police was adjudged the most corrupt across the continent. So it isn’t just a Ghana problem, then.
After the police came business executives; and then government officials, tax officials, judges and magistrates, members of parliament, local government councilors, office of the Presidency, traditional leaders and religious leaders.
That sounds about right. Except for religious leaders, they really need to score higher than they have.
