It is always an honour and privilege to be with you, anytime, any day. I have never been so proud of my Yoruba heritage. I agree with the Ghanaian President Dramani Mahama regarding you a "King of Peace & Unity", because that's what you really stand for.

Your style and mode of engagement is unprecedented! May God be with you and uphold you for us!

What daughters need to know before marriage

For two days now, I have been down and helpless. Helpless in the sense that, I am like a doctor watching his friend die just because he can't do anything about her illness.

A good friend and kind woman I know, fell in love with and got married to someone, whom society will describe as below her standard and expectation; yet she did all she could to make the relationship work. She sacrificed body and soul, material and heart, just to make their marriage work.

But just as waters have their boiling point, she just broke down when she got to the limit and could take it no longer. As I watch her slowly but painfully let go of a relationship she had sacrificed so much for, there was nothing I could do as a counselor than to pray with them. Yes, mistakes are part of life but I can't afford to allow my daughter repeat mistakes people made; I will rather teach her some lessons now for her to abide by, for obedience is better than sacrifice.

Every great cook knows the importance of the right kind of ingredient to achieve a great taste. In the same way, well known restaurants have their signature on the taste of their food, which shows how they don't take anything less when it comes to the right kind of ingredients.

I will teach my daughter to accept nothing less. Never allow any man who wants to marry her disrespect her. When you lose respect, you lose love. The two go together. A man who treats her as a priority, not his downtime, spare time or sometime; but as his all-time. If he can't be there for her all the time, then he is not worth her time.

I will teach her to learn to live alone till the time is right for her to go into marriage. The truth is, the people who are capable of being alone are capable of love, of sharing, of going into the deepest core of another person without possessing the other, without becoming dependent on the other, without reducing the other to a thing and without becoming addicted to the other.

Rather allow her partner absolute freedom because her happiness doesn't depends on him but on herself, and her happiness cannot be taken away. She ought to be a God fearing woman and well established. Someone who won't change just for a man to like her.

But be a reflection of the man she wants to get married to. This also means preparation is the key; any house without a solid foundation will surely crumble. The man who wants to marry her must be led by God, a man whose roots are deep in God. With such a man, there is no reason to fear the winds that blows marriages.

Not a man who walks with God while holding hands with the devil; not a good looking Christian who tries to lure her into sin. She will value her body, she won't go out advertising her husband's goods and giving out free samples to boys. She won't take off her panties because he called her sweet names, but will take them off because he is married to her and is in loved with her.

She won't go for riches, rather for a rich heart. Her humble number one rule is “never to be number two”. In conclusion "In Praise of a Good Wife; A truly good wife is the most precious treasure a man can find!" - Proverbs 31:10 (CEV).

Please share with your friends, someone out there needs this.

Egypt Based Al Ahly Is Ready to Make a Bid for Ghana Captain Asamoah Gyan

Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly is ready to make a bid for Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan.

GhanaStar.com was made to know that the club have initiated negotiations with the striker who is looking for an exit out of Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG.

Ahly are interested in bringing Gyan on loan till the end of the season and the player has been given 48 hours to respond to the offer from the multiple time African champions.

It is not yet clear what the details of the offer are but are sticking point will be the wages to be paid to Gyan, one of the highest earners in world football at the moment.

Ahly already have Ghanaian hit man John Antwi on their books but the capture of a genuine star of the world game in Gyan will boost their profile and their chances of winning another African title.

Yahoo sold to US Telecoms giant Verizon for $5bn

US internet firm Yahoo is being acquired by American telecoms giant Verizon Communications for nearly $5bn (£3.8bn) in cash.

Yahoo will be combined with AOL, another faded internet star, which Verizon bought last year.

The deal does not include Yahoo's valuable stake in Chinese firm Alibaba.

The price tag for the deal is well below the $44bn Microsoft offered for Yahoo in 2008 or the $125bn it was worth during the dot.com boom.

Verizon said the deal for Yahoo's core internet business, which has more than a billion active users a month, would make it a global mobile media company.

Marissa Mayer, chief executive of Yahoo, said: "Yahoo is a company that has changed the world, and will continue to do so through this combination with Verizon and AOL."

In an email to staff, Ms Mayer said she was "planning to stay", adding: "I love Yahoo, and I believe in all of you. It's important to me to see Yahoo into its next chapter."

However, the takeover, which is due to be completed in early 2017, raises questions about whether the Yahoo brand could disappear.

"That's the big open-ended question: what are they going to do with the brands?" said Michael Goodman, a director at Strategy Analytics.

Egypt and Ghana Join Forces to Fight Terrorism

Egypt will continue to work together with Ghana to exchange views, experiences and knowledge on the threat of terrorism.

That is because Egypt and Ghana are facing similar challenges and have similar aspirations, and terrorism remains a threat to their aspirations.

The Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Mohamed Heider, gave this assurance when he spoke to the Daily Graphic on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 or the National Day, which fell last Thursday.

The Ambassador said Egypt and Ghana were also two of the major African countries “when it comes to their role in promoting, adopting and defending the African Agenda.”

He observed that both countries were leading countries in the peace keeping forces within the United Nations in Africa Missions.

The Ambassador said Egypt would work closely with other countries to face such challenges together.

He said Egypt was doing everything possible to fight this ugly phenomenon that had now become a global challenge.

Mr Heider announced that Egypt was leading African efforts to intensify the dialogue between the United Nations Security Council and the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) to serve our African interests.

“Taking the challenges that face our beloved continent into consideration, peace and security will always be a priority to manage and face these threats,” he stated.

He noted that 2016 was specifically significant for Egypt as it took its seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and a member of the Peace and Security Council of the AU, and was presiding over the UN Commission for Anti-Terrorism.

He noted that “as 70 per cent of the Security Council Agenda is related to African issues, Egypt has played and will always play a significant role to carry the voice of its African brothers and sisters in the UN, AU and other similar organisations. Last year saw important changes in Egypt in the path of our democratic transformation. A parliament has been elected and all institutions are now complete and fully functional.”

Addressing dignitaries at the Egypt House at Roman Ridge in Accra, the Egyptian Ambassador gave an assurance that Egypt was determined to launch mega projects to support its ambitious plans of economic transformation.

He said Egypt had hosted two big international investment conferences in the last two years to promote investment in both Egypt and Africa in general, and establish more links between the business people in this regard.

He recalled another mega project last year— the extension of the Suez Canal, turning the area around it into a prime economic and logistic hub to serve commerce, trade and transport among Africa, Europe, Asia and the rest of the world.

As part of the endless Egyptian efforts in the multilateral fora, Egypt hosted major events to push the African interests forward.

He announced that Egypt hosted the Tripartite Summit in Egypt last year to launch the free trade area between the three blocks (COMESA-SADCC-EACC) aimed at full free and comprehensive free trade area involving the whole continent.

The Ambassador commended the Egyptian companies operating in the various fields in the country, such as Euroget de-Invest, Egypt Air, Rafi Aluminium, El Sewedy Cables and Electrometers and Egyptpro.

Since the revolution of June 30, 2013, Egypt and many others are heading for Ghana to do business.

To cope with this demand and to help promote the bilateral relations, a commercial office will be opened at the Embassy next September, he announced.

Ambassador Heider expressed his country’s admiration and respect to the bright model of democracy in Ghana and the valuable role of President John Dramani Mahama, especially during his chairmanship of the ECOWAS last year, to promote and support the democratic transformation in West Africa.

He wished Ghanaians well as they prepared to choose new leadership and representatives in parliament at the general election that would take place before the end of the year.

As the Ambassador of Egypt, he said he would always be proud of the historic and friendly relations between the two countries, cemented by Mrs Fathia Nkrumah, the Egyptian First Lady of Ghana after independence. “That made us real family and in-laws,” he added.

The National Day was graced with the presence of ministers of state, Members of Parliament, members of the diplomatic corps and the Egyptian community.

The leader of the Ghanaian delegation to Egypt’s National Day celebration, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, commended Egypt for stabilising and strengthening its democratic pillars, as exhibited in the successful organisation of its parliamentary election.

He said it was evident that Egypt was on its way to becoming a stalwart nation that upheld democratic values.

In that regard, he said Ghana joined hands with Egypt towards the achievement of a free and democratic country, where everyone had a stake in the country’s governance.

Rooney reveals his new No.10 position under Mourinho

The 30-year-old has confirmed that he will be played directly behind a striker this season and will not be used in the deeper role given to him by Louis van Gaal last term

Wayne Rooney admits he is keen to get to grips with his new position after being told by Jose Mourinho that he will play as a No.10 for Manchester United.

The 30-year-old was deployed in a central midfield role during the latter stages of United’s last season under Louis van Gaal and maintained that position throughout England’s Euro 2016 campaign earlier this summer.

But in his debut press conference, Mourinho was adamant that he would not consider Rooney as a midfielder option, and the England captain is relishing the prospect of another change in position.

“It’s almost like a free role and I am excited to play it,” said Rooney.

“He said to me about playing No.10. That is something I’ve now got to work on and get myself in the right position to score goals. I have scored goals all through my career and I have no doubt in my goalscoring ability. Hopefully I can do that this season.

“I like to be involved in the game and I am now playing for Jose who, straight away, has no fears about players coming deep if they want to.

I can’t be bribed; posterity will judge me - Rawlings

An obviously charged former President Rawlings explaining his position on the bribery issue

One of the most powerful families in the country is that of the Rawlingses. Former President J. J. Rawlings is the longest-serving Head of State in the history of the country, with a number of landmark achievements to his credit.

But he is also criticised for certain decisions taken under his 18 years of revolt and revolution, as well as democratic governance.

His wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, on the other hand, is the longest-serving First Lady and leading advocate of women’s empowerment in Africa.

As is to be expected, issues concerning the family are topical in the country’s political discourse.

Former President Rawlings has been a lead crusader in anti-corruption issues. Recently, however, there have been media reports that he took a gift from late Nigerian President Sanni Abacha.

When the news broke in the Nigerian newspaper, the Guardian, the Political Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Kobby Asmah, decided to contact former President Rawlings to throw some light on the issues.

After back and forth movements spanning some few days, he agreed to grant the interview. The appointed date and time could not be confirmed until one fine morning when the former President decided, through a telephone call from his Press Secretary, to engage the Daily Graphic Team.

The team got to his residence before the appointed time to go through the necessary protocols.

When he opened his private office to us, and the ‘huge tall frame’ of a personality welcomed us to a two-hour interview session, it was not devoid of the ‘Papa J Character’ reminiscent of his days as the Head of State of Ghana.

“Have you read what they have written about me? It is nasty eh?” the former President asked, unexpectedly.

Momentarily, I went blank but came back to answer: “Yes, I have read what is in the media domain.”

Then the former President plunged into action.

His emotions, gestures, confident-looking postures, demeanour, articulation reminded the Daily Graphic Team of his heydey at the helm of the affairs of state engaging with Ghanaians on how to build a country of promise.

I had expected to ask questions, but very characteristic of him, the former President decided to walk us through a lecture touching on his days as head of state (military and civilian), some of the difficult and sensitive decisions he took, his observations out of political office, Ghana’s present political scene, the challenges confronting the Ghanaian media and finally the issue at stake.

The much-anticipated interview had long begun when I started firing my questions on governance in the country, the 2016 elections, his role in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and many other issues.

No doubt there were “booms” as usual.

Below are excerpts.

Kobby Asmah (KA):

Do you sometimes miss the Office of President, Sir, having been the longest serving Head of State of this country?

Jerry John Rawlings (JJR):

I don’t. At the same time, it is sometimes burdensome that I do not have the resources and executive authority to deal with the worrisome issues and pain on the ground. My office has to deal with people with hardships including their inability to pay school and hospital fees, rent and funerals. Where else can they go? I am uncomfortable taking donations and contributions from people to support other needy people, but what can I do?

Thankfully the Presidency, various personalities and organisations chip in once in a while.

KA:
What in your opinion must we do to permanently solve or minimise what you describe as the pain on the ground?

JJR:

What is long overdue is the setting up of a foundation to cater for some of these humanitarian needs. The burden is too much. Ten years of being at the centre of revolt and revolution and eight years of constitutional rule with some treacherous characters in the leadership can also be quite stressful.

KA:

Sir, can you please share with us your key focus while in government, being at the centre of revolt and revolution and eight years of constitutional rule?

JJR:

We did not go into government to make money or business. Because of that, we ran a corrupt-free administration. The key focus was to identify competent human resource to manage relevant institutions in a competent and efficient manner.

In effect, I spent 30-40 percent of my time watching out for corrupt or indications of corruptible behaviour. Many choose to blight our record, but we revived the financial health of the country and left Ghana in good stead for sustained economic growth.

KA:

Ghana goes into her seventh elections on December 7, this year. There are uncertainties, anxieties, mistrust and suspicion all over the political environment.

How do you see the political climate preceding the presidential and parliamentary elections? What should all stakeholders do to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections?

JJR:

I have indicated before that all stakeholders; particularly the leading political parties, have to ensure that as they campaign they do not employ aggressive and abusive political rhetoric that tends to raise the political temperature. Leadership of political parties should rein in communicators and other supporters who resort to mudslinging, abuse, false accusations and insults in their quest to denigrate their opponents.

It is also imperative that the security agencies are seen to be firm and impartial in their handling of complicated political situations, while the media should desist from allowing their mediums to be hijacked by politicians for negative politicking.

If all the stakeholders – political parties, media, the judiciary, security agencies and the Electoral Commission (EC) play by the rules, the process will end successfully, and all will accept the eventual winners.

KA:

Your views on corruption are globally known, but what is this revelation that you received money from one Gwarzo from Nigeria, 18 years after the matter had died?

JJR:

We have allowed the $5 million lie to run, when it was $2 million. I am tired of falsehood and liars all over the place. With the pile-up of lies and fabrication, I wanted to set the record straight once and for all. That money did not go for my personal use and was not meant to influence me to whitewash Abacha’s image. My credibility is priceless and cannot be bought. My compatriots have always been nervous when I am about to speak, no matter how close I am to them!

General Abacha was unassuming and carried the determined pride of a Nigerian. His intervention during the uncertainties around Shonekan’s period was very timely and kept the centre in Nigeria together. He obviously respected the integrity of our leadership and chose to support us without prompting or being asked. How was I to know he was engaging in stashing huge funds? Didn’t we all hear about this negative behaviour after he had died? Incidentally, Nigeria used to make the most contributions, I believe, to the ANC struggle.

I cannot stifle the truth. Jerry Rawlings never stifles the truth no matter how long some attempt to suffocate the reality. Gwarzo should not have done what he did. Not against me. We survived and succeeded on the incorruptibility of the word. This nation exploded once over corruption.

Being socialist minded as I thought we were, our focus was to turn around most of our state enterprises, and we had no time or interest in promoting business for personal profit, as a result of which we hardly had any money to engage in the neo-colonialist struggle. I never declined support from progressive-minded leaders because we all knew the nature of the struggle we were engaged in. Not one of my colleagues in the PNDC/NDC can accuse me of misappropriating funds for my personal use.

Sometime in 1982/83 a Pan-African wealthy admirer of our revolution flew in to meet me; after exchange of views; before he departed, he signed a cheque for $1 million. After his departure, I picked up the cheque and tossed it onto the workshop table in the bedroom at the Castle with one of our security comrades following me. About seven to eight years later, this comrade was asking about the cheque and the need to cash the money for some project.

Having forgotten about it, I asked if he had any idea where it could be and he said I tossed it onto the workshop table so I asked him to go look for it. He found it and attempted to cash it but there was no money. I asked him to call the donor so I could enquire what had happened to the money. The gentleman explained that after about six months of the money sitting in the account, he thought we had no need for it so he took it back.

When Mandela was going round the world soliciting for funds and he came here for support we were privileged to contribute $1 million. Can this contribution be called bribery? Mandela was fighting apartheid, and our revolution was fighting neo-colonialism.

Governments and organisations, as well as individuals all over the world, will either support you or support an opposition against you depending on whether you are perceived as being progressive or reactionary. There are those who put these kinds of support into their private pockets and accounts while there are those of us who receive for patriotic and humanitarian purposes and to continue the neo-colonial struggle.

And this support takes various forms; logistical, political or financial. What do you think Russia is doing in Syria supporting the regime while America is supporting the opposition to wage war against the regime? What is Saudi Arabia doing in Yemen and neighbouring countries? This kind of support for or against goes on everywhere all the time. Denying it does not mean it is not happening.

KA:

Very well sir, but what was the exact purpose of this money? Was it something you solicited? Did you appropriate a portion for your personal use?

JJR:

As I indicated earlier, it came without prompting or solicitation. We received various forms of support from leaders of government and other well-wishers in our continued fight against neo-colonialism. If I had gained personally in any way, or if I had been stashing money from such contributions, I would not at the end of my tenure, have been in search of $28,000 for a close family member’s surgery when the incoming government refused to approve the medical cost. I was compelled to borrow the money for the surgery. I have been compelled to borrow much bigger amounts to support a lot of our compatriots who have been through painful situations as a result of the persecution they suffered after we left office.

KA:

There have been a lot of reactions since the revelation. What is your response? Has this revelation rather punched a hole in your quest for leadership of integrity? Mr Hackman Owusu -Agyemang, a former Foreign Minister under former President Kufuor’s administration, says you should go and sin no more. What is your reaction?

JJR:

As for Hackman Owusu-Agyemang’s comments, what I have to say is that God will approve of my sins so far as they’re directed at people of his ilk.

Man’s quest for power through corrupt means will push them into attempting to destroy people of integrity. Some societies jail people for lying, but here liars and thieves have gained the upper hand. But not over me. The truth for me is divine. Uniqueness, excellence and godliness cannot be without truth.

If we are looking for something negative to believe about Rawlings, then go search for something else. If we are, however, as weak and faithless as to want to believe a dirty charge of bribery and corruption against me, then evil has triumphed. My unshakable integrity has served a noble purpose almost all my life. The neo-colonialism struggle is not over and people cannot afford to lose the dignity and strength of their integrity. You need it to continue the struggle against neo-colonialism and the destructive effect of bribery and corruption.

This orchestration is designed to weaken your belief in Rawlings and most of all in your very own self. You need an incorruptible degree or quality of strength to fight this evil and you need your integrity to fight a good fight. I find it laughable that some have used the media to try to rationalise and even speak almost as if they know the facts more than I do.

What could be the explanation for the media stoking this issue to this extent? My reputation and image presents a huge challenge and obstacle to bribery and corruption, so if the media can be used to create the impression and convince people that I am corruptible, this would change the paradigm and destroy the factor that makes Rawlings a very potent force.

If the people should begin to have doubts about my integrity on account of this falsehood, our enemies and traitors would have won. For them to misinterpret a contribution or support in our fight against neo-colonialism is quite disingenuous. A few too many characters in the media earn their living this way. Destroying the integrity of Rawlings has been the main objective since 1979 to this day. Newspapers and other characters have been set up and financed with this objective as the main goal.

Kobby Asmah

This brings me to the issue of your view on political discourse in the country. Do you follow general discussions on our airwaves, print and social media?

Jerry John Rawlings

If we are going to allow some of these self-acclaimed media analysts to influence our perspectives about what is true or false, right or wrong then we will continue to have difficulties with rising above mediocrity, petty-mindedness and prejudicial thinking. Our sense of cultural justice and basic intellect is being seriously warped by some of these characters. Let us free ourselves, let us disentangle our minds from the daily barrage of shallow and hollow rhetoric on our airwaves.

Let’s not allow our resolve against bribery and corruption to weaken. That is the clear aim of these characters. They feel threatened by anyone with higher morals than they have.

When I got that financial award from the Hunger Project did I not use it as seed money for a university? Is this not what I do, is it not my nature? I will not tolerate or permit any such thing. My mind is nowhere near materialism.

In November 2015 when the Minister of Petroleum informed me of a decision to name one of the Floating,Production, Storage and Offloading Vessels (FPSOs) after me, I declined the offer and wrote back to the Minister saying:

“I will rather live in the hearts of men, than have my name on monuments, streets and circles.”
Let me assure the numerous people of my solid faith here in Ghana and beyond that my integrity is intact and unshakable. I cannot force belief on anyone. If some do not know who I am…the quality of my integrity by now, there’s little I can do to help them. Maybe, when the carrion eating vultures and truth haters have had their fill, reasoning minds and hearts will prevail.

Kobby Asmah:

Questions have been raised about your role in the NDC. As party founder you have criticised the party publicly and recently referred to the NPP candidate as not being corrupt. Do you still support the NDC?

Jerry John Rawlings:

Do you know the number of times Justice Annan kept reminding me that he belongs to the UP/PP tradition during the PNDC era? And yet I remained a great admirer of Justice Annan, his brilliance, his diplomacy, his sense of fairness and the quality of his judgement.

Justice Annan was one of the finest statesmen of integrity that I have come across and gave his best to this country as most of us attempted to do. Justice Annan would indeed have been a very fine President.

I will therefore, not misjudge NPP on account of some of its callous, vicious elements just as I will not disown or misjudge the revolution, the PNDC and the NDC as some of its appointees and leading figures have done in dissociating themselves from the PNDC, June 4 and 31st December. Treachery and disloyalty is not my nature.

Some within the party have turned themselves into kingmakers who will do all in their power to upstage the party structure and operate the party from their homes. My criticisms of socio-political issues have not been restricted to the NDC. When I was very critical of the Kufuor government and his party I was then in the good books of the NDC, but today after eight years of NDC whom do I criticise? Naturally, I will criticise the party that has been saddled with the responsibility to manage the country.

I sometimes echo the opinions of the voiceless and I do so with goodwill. I do so to ensure that the party and its government stay on their toes. My role as Founder should not be a basis to suffocate my conscience. The NDC is undoubtedly a formidable political force borne out of a revolution that many laid down their lives for.

Our responsibility is to every man and woman who sacrificed with their blood and toil during those heady days. Failure to adhere to the principles of probity, accountability, transparency and integrity will be a betrayal of those who sacrificed for this nation.

Kobby Asmah:

Many including the global community are expecting to read your memoir. Sir, how come we do not have your memoir written and published by now?

Jerry John Rawlings:

My memoir will be out by my 70th birthday and the title will however be shocking but true.

Kobby Asmah:

Thank You Sir.

Tevez denies Napoli & Chelsea links: I am staying at Boca

The forward's happiness at the Bombonera had been placed in doubt following a painful elimination from the Libertadores, but he affirmed that he was not thinking of an exit

Carlos Tevez has committed his future to Boca Juniors after being linked with a return to European football.

The ex-Juventus, Manchester City and Manchester United forward was reportedly considering an exit from the Bombonera, with Napoli and Chelsea rumoured to be interested.

But after a three-day leave period from the club following Copa Libertadores elimination, Tevez affirmed that he was not thinking of abandoning his boyhood club.

"Of course I am staying at Boca. Everything else that is being said are just rumours," he told reporters in Monday's press conference.

"It is almost always the case in Boca that if you miss out on an objective a whole soap opera is staged and we are used to it, but I see myself at Boca for a long time yet.

"I am going to stay at Boca even if Napoli and Chelsea come knocking."
Tevez had spent his time away playing golf in Uruguay, but he joked that he will not be switching careers any time soon.

"I signed for three years and I had no doubts over what I signed and over the love I have for this shirt," he said.

"Actually I think I won't carry on, I am going to take up professional golf. That's a joke, by the way!"

Tevez won the Primera Division and Copa Argentina titles during his first six months back at Boca, but the club finished empty-handed during the transitional championship at the start of 2016 and went out of the Libertadores at the semi-final stage to Ecuador's Independiente del Valle.

RUMOURS: Manchester United want Bonucci

The Red Devils already appear set to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus, but are also hoping to lure one of their star centre-backs to the Premier League

Manchester United are interested in signing Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, according to Manchester Evening News.

The Red Devils are confident of landing the signing of Paul Pogba from the Serie A champions, and, despite already having signed centre-back Eric Bailly this summer, are hoping to boost their defensive options.

The 29-year-old is said to top Jose Mourinho's targets when it comes to defenders, while Manchester City have also shown an interest in him.

With Pogba's departure seeming imminent, the Bianconeri are unlikely to want to sell another star player, especially as he has another four years left on his contract.

Medhi Benatia's arrival from Bayern Munich, however, could see Juve persuaded to sell should the right price be offered.

Arteta deletes all Arsenal posts off Instagram

The former Gunners captain has wiped clean his social media account following his move to Manchester City, and unfollowed his former club on the website

Mikel Arteta has risked angering Arsenal fans by deleting all posts on his official Instagram from his time at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spaniard left the Gunners at the end of last season following the expiry of his contract and took up a coaching role under Pep Guardiola at Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Arteta is very much starting afresh on Instgram and now only following City's official page, along with many of Guardiola's squad. The likes of Santi Cazorla, Hector Bellerin and Petr Cech survived the cull, though.

Arteta captained Arsenal on multiple occasions, including the FA Cup final win over Hull City in 2014, and made nearly 150 appearances over an injury-hit five-year spell.

Why Juventus are willing to pay €90 million for Higuain

The Bianconeri are ready to make the Argentine the third most expensive player in history in the hope of ending their two-decade wait for Champions League glory

Juventus want to win the Champions League at all costs - even if that means paying €90 million for a player who will turn 29 before the turn of the year.

The imminent departure of Paul Pogba to Manchester United threatened to undermine Juve's attempts to re-establish themselves among Europe's elite and Manchester City's interest in Leonardo Bonucci also suggested the Bianconeri were a big fish swimming with sharks.

The Italian champions are presently in the process of tying Bonucci the latter down to a new deal, one that will earn the play-making centre-half €5m season after tax, but it is the move for Higuain that is of greatest significance.

It is a statement signing; a message to the rest of Europe's elite that Juve mean business. Big business, as underlined not only by the €90m transfer fee but also the fact that Higuain will earn €7m after tax for the next four years.

It is now 20 years since Juventus last lifted the Champions League, which is an agonising drought for a club of their size. They have been beaten finalists four times in the interim, losing in 1997, in 1998, on penalties to AC Milan in 2003, and suffering a 3-1 defeat to a brilliant Barcelona side in Berlin just over 12 months ago.

Ghana FA fend off bribery reports on 2014 World Cup qualification

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Wednesday refuted reports suggesting that Ghana bribed its way to secure qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

A leaked document has revealed that the Ghanaian government paid 'bribes' in 2014 to aid the Black Stars' qualification to the World Cup in Brazil, a report by a local tabloid Ghana Sports Newspaper said.

The report claimed the leaked document from the Sports Ministry disclosed that the government made 420,000 U.S. dollars unclassified payments which the newspaper described as 'bribe' to secure a place for Ghana at the global soccer event where Ghana performed poorly.

But the GFA has described the report as palpably false saying neither it nor the government have budgets for bribes or condone bribery in any form.

In a statement copied to Xinhua, the GFA said such utterly wrong suggestion denigrates the hard work and achievements of the Black Stars players, culminating in the historic and indisputable 7-3 aggregate victory over Egypt that secured Ghana's place at the World Cup.

"The Black Stars players, technical team and management worked hard to secure Ghana' s place at the World Cup and as always we will continue to win our matches through fair means," it said.

"While urging the media to be responsible in their reportage, we will not hesitate to use the right legal channels available to us to seek redress over such false reports in future," the GFA added.

The government is yet to response to the allegations.

Rio 2016: Brazil rolls out new anti-terrorism measures ahead of Olympics

Rio 2016: Brazil rolls out new anti-terrorism measures ahead of Olympics

The Brazilian government has in recent days been announcing the measures to reinforce security at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Aug.5-21, especially after the arrest of ten people suspected of plotting terrorist acts.

In a secret operation codenamed Hashtag conducted two weeks before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games begin, 10 people were arrested in a number of states. This was announced by Justice Minister Alexandre Moraes on July 21 at a press conference, who stated that those arrested had been given temporary prison sentences of 30 days.

He said the first phase of Operation Hashtag had arrested 10 individuals believed to be part of a "suspected terrorism cell" in Brazil. Two more suspects were not arrested but are currently being searched for.

According to Moraes, Brazilian intelligence operatives had been monitoring the suspects for several months, and that these suspects had exchanged information about "preparing terrorist acts" through text messages and on social networks, such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

"From the moment that they began speaking of preparations...the government acted swiftly," he said.

"Various messages showed these people celebrating the attacks in Orlando and Nice...and posting and sharing executions carried out by the Islamic State," added the minister.

Certain suspects also released a video on the Internet swearing allegiance to the Islamic State, although there was no indication they had personal contact with members of the terrorist group or travelled outside of Brazil to meet them.

"They repeated recordings, there was no interaction. The person who pledged allegiance was made to believe they were part of the Islamic State," explained Moraes.

Last week, General Sergio Etchegoyen, chief minister of institutional security, said the Nice attack had led the government "to revise all security measures and adopt far more rigid security" for the Games.

"We must make an audit of our entire planning to see if any weaknesses exist that, for any reason, we might have missed," he added.

On Thursday, the government held a press conference where it announced that, in order to control and supervise transport, over 21,000 soldiers from the Brazilian army will patrol highways, train stations, the Rio port and the city's airports.

During the Olympic Games, an elite military unit will also be responsible for security at competition sites, while Rio's military police will focus on public security on the streets.

On July 24, when the Olympic Village opens, restrictions will begin on the airspace around Rio, with the air force having 80 planes and 15,000 personnel to ensure air safety.

At the conference, Defense Minister Raul Jungmann said that no terrorism suspect will be able to enter Brazil without being spotted and monitored.

"Brazil is a peaceful country but it is not a defenseless country. We know how to defend ourselves and counter-attack. If something happens without our knowledge, we will be untiring and implacable in pursuing and punishing those responsible," emphasized the minister.

Jungmann also added that representatives "from intelligence agencies and systems of 106 countries" would also be on the ground to help security efforts.

New security norms also entered into force on July 18, with increased checks at airports, including random searches of passengers and luggage.

Last week, a simulation of a terrorist attack on a train in the Deodoro station united for the first time all the Brazilian forces operating as part of the Olympic security plan.

The exercise, involving around 1,000 police, soldiers, security agents and extras, simulated the explosion of a "dirty bomb" by two terrorists in a train compartment.

The exercise had been planned by around 20 institutions for six months, to simulate conditions as real as those that might occur.

Such simulations will continue in the coming days, until the first athletes arrive on July 24.
