Google has banned a Taliban-developed news app from the Play Store as it violates the company's policy on hate speech.
Google has removed a Taliban-developed app from the Play Store on the grounds that it violates Google’s rules on hate speech.
The Pashto Afghan News – alemarah app featured news and videos produced by the Taliban.
Google said, “While we don’t comment on specific apps, our policies are designed to provide a great experience for users and developers. That’s why we remove apps from Google Play that violate those policies.”
Google’s policy on hate speech says, "We don't allow apps that advocate against groups of people based on their race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, nationality, veteran status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Taliban told Bloomberg said that the app was removed due to “technical issues” and that the app itself is “part of our advanced technological efforts to make more global audience.”
The spokesperson maintains that the app will reappear soon. While there are millions of apps available through the Play Store, the Alemarah app was removed shortly after being discovered, so it may not last very long even if it does make its way to the storefront again.
