For three days, the President will go through a heavily-loaded itinerary in the region that has solidly stood behind the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in national elections and has been described as the “World Bank” of the ruling party.
President Mahama would interact with the chiefs and people, inspect ongoing projects, cut the sod for new projects and commission completed ones in various communities.
Among the projects to be commissioned is the 46km Eastern Corridor road from Dodo Papesu to Nkwanta.
Battleground
It appears the Volta region will become a major battleground for the two leading political parties in the 2016 general election.
For some time now, the region has been in the news for political reasons, with the NDC and the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) at each other’s throat.
The NPP has accused the NDC government of not doing enough to advance the region’s development, although the region has consistently voted massively for the NDC.
But, the NDC has dismissed the NPP accusations arguing the NPP’s record of development comes nowhere near that of the NDC.
No campaigning
Although the government has explained that the ‘Accounting to the People’ tour is not meant for political campaign, the President, nonetheless, is using it to establish the fact that his government has done enough to deserve a second four-year term.
He has touted his achievements in infrastructure projects and other initiatives, backing his claim with evidence.
