Support small scale mining-Obuasi residents tell Minerals Commission

Residents of Obuasi Municipality in the Ashanti Region have challenged the Minerals Commission to ensure that 60% of mining concession of Anglogold Ashanti released to government is transferred to support small scale mining.

The immediate release of the mining concession to the locals, according to residents of Obuasi, will check the current standoff between Anglogold Ashanti and small scale miners in Obuasi and its environs.

Currently, the Obuasi mine is not in full operation due to operational challenges and invasion of illegal miners on some part of its concession.

Residents bemoaned that the current face-off has rendered several people jobless, crippled education, businesses and health care delivery in the area.

In an interview with Ultimate news’ Isaac Bediako, a resident and interested stakeholder of Obuasi, Kwame Amoh expressed fear that the collapse of Anglogold Ashanti will cripple several business activities in Obuasi and effectively render it a ghost town.

Residents further charged the Minerals Commission to resolve the long standing feud between small scale miners and AngloGold Ashanti.
