Those who pursue polytechnic education have better prospects of becoming productive, self-reliant and to attain the highest academic qualifications, Professor Emmanuel Sakyi, Rector of Ho Polytechnic said on Friday.
“The polytechnic graduate who is academically determined can proceed to the Doctor of Technology through the Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology in any discipline”, he assured.
Polytechnic students must therefore “drop” any feeling of “mediocrity and uncertainty” regarding the academic and career choices they have made.
They have a wide range of opportunities awaiting them to attain the utmost in their fields of study and training.
Professor Sakyi was addressing the Polytechnic’s 23rd matriculation ceremony to officially admit 1,279 students for the 2015/2016 academic year.
He admonished the students to develop the mentality of becoming job creators and employers rather than jobseekers and employees.
Professor Sakyi assured the students that government attaches prime importance to progression in Polytechnic education hence the establishment of the Council for Technical Vocational Education and Training (COTVET).
The African Union similarly saw in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) the key to resolving the continent’s development dilemma.
“…this is a golden opportunity for which we all need to work hard in determination to achieve,” he said.
Professor Sakyi advised the fresh students to exercise their freedoms within the limits of the rules and regulations of the Polytechnic and the laws of the country.
“…breaking any of them comes with its own severe consequences… neither friendly nor sympathetic. Nevertheless, these rules and regulations are not meant to put unnecessary fear in you but rather to guide, direct and model your life in a desired manner.”
Professor Sakyi said the Polytechnic and government were endeavouring to improve on the institution’s academic and social infrastructure and students must be ready to make sacrifices to derive the best from what would be available to them.
