The recent stoning of an Afghan woman in Ghor province gained worldwide attention on Tuesday after video of the killing emerged online.
The woman, identified in news reports as 19-year-old Rokhshana, was accused of adultery. She had been forcibly married to an older man, but tried to elope with a man who is much younger.
The man was reportedly punished with lashings.
The video below shows a group of men hurling rocks at a woman, presumably Rokhshana, who is shoulders-deep in a hole in the ground. It ends before the men kill her.
Officials in Ghor blamed the Taliban for killing Rokhshana, though others have warned that officials often use the Taliban to cover up the actions of others. Some activists think fundamentalist tribesmen in the village of Ghalmeen carried out the stoning, a form of punishment that is technically banned in Afghanistan.
However, Ghalmeen is allegedly under Taliban control, and activists did not rule out Taliban involvement.
Ghor police chief Mustafa Mohseni said that the government will look into the stoning when the government has wrested control of Ghalmeen from the Taliban.
