Ghana’s President John Mahama said his administration was investigating alleged subsidy concessions enjoyed by Dangote cement that made its products more competitive than the locally manufactured cement in the country.
Mahama has hinted of a likely upward review of tariffs on Dangote cement imported into the country, subject to the recommendation of the Ghana International Trade Commission.
Fielding questions at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) forum for presidential candidates, the Ghanaian President however denied plans to ban the importation of Dangote cement into the country.
“The right body to investigate is the Ghana International Trade Commission. And if it is found that Dangote is being subsidized by the Nigerian government; or they are given some waivers that make them more competitive and able to sell lower than our local companies. We might adjust the tariffs on their cement to reflect that and improve the competition between us.
“But we cannot stop the competition because of ETLS but we must make sure they are playing by the rules so that they do not have an unfair advantage over our people,” he assured.
