Ghana Air Force Presents Aircraft To University Of Ghana For The Study Of Aeronautics & Space Technology

The School of Engineering Sciences has received a decommissioned aircraft (Aermacchi MB-339) donated by the Ghana Air Force.

Professor Boateng Onwona-Agyeman, Dean of the School of the Engineering Sciences, in his welcome address paid glowing tribute to his predecessors and University management for initiating the process and said the donation would serve as a good resource when the new four-year undergraduate programme in Aeronautics and Space Science Technology is finally mounted in the next academic year.

He expressed appreciation to the Ghana Air Force for accepting to make this donation to the University, and said the collaboration is in line with the Vice Chancellor’s vision of building collaborations between the University and other state and non-state institutions for the advancement of teaching and research.

The foundation Dean, and immediate Past Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, Professor Samuel Sefa-Dedeh, in his remarks acknowledged the efforts of an alumnus of the University, Kofi Apenteng, who he said played an instrumental role. In reiterating the sentiments expressed by the Dean, he said the aircraft would enhance practical sessions, while contributing to the teaching and learning of aeronautics.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu in his address said the University was happy with the growing partnership between the Ghana Air Force Training School (GAFTS) and the School of Engineering Sciences, adding that the University is ready to assist GAFTS in the development and accreditation of its curriculum.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Michael Samson Oje, the Chief of Air Staff, Air-Vice Marshal Maxwell Mantsebi-Tei Nagai expressed gratitude to the University and other dignitaries for introducing the Aeronautics and Space Science Technology programme. 

He reiterated that the Aermacchi MB-339 aircraft will serve as an instructional resource for practical training of young and enquiring minds to further push the frontiers of both civil and military aviation engineering in Ghana.

The aircraft was formally handed over to the Vice Chancellor after a brief ceremony at the forecourt of the School of Engineering Sciences.
