The Counseling Unit of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has graduated its first batch of 25 peer counselors in a ceremony held at the University’s campus.
The peer counselors made up 10 females and 15 males were taken through basic counseling concepts, communication skills and ethical issues in counseling for a semester to equip them with skills be able to counsel their peers.
Rev. Stephen Acheampong, head of the UPSA Counseling Unit, explaining the rationale behind the training student counselors indicated that there was an increasing numbers of students who needed counseling services, thus the need to train student counselors who could address some of the needs of their peers.
Moreover, Rev. Acheampong revealed that problems related to the transitional phase of most freshmen from their various second cycle institutions into the University are best addressed by their peers.
The roles to the peer counselors, according to Rev. Acheampong would include organizing outreach programs for their peers, as well as marketing the counseling services of the University to their colleagues. “You are now student advocates of the Counseling Unit, and are therefore expected to market the Counseling Unit to your colleagues as well as help them solve some of their problems.” He said.
Dean of Students, Mr. Mawuli Feglo, chairperson for the graduation ceremony reiterated the need for peer counselors and stated its importance in the university set up. He congratulated the students for undergoing the program and advised them to be ethical in all their dealings.
