National President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Michael Paa-Quecy Adu |
According to him, the youth play a pivotal role in national development and the only way to do that is through self discovery.
Mr. Paa-Quecy Adu believes that even though there are several roles to be played by the youth in national development, the fundamental and most significant is discovering who they are; their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and working on them.
The youth, he said, can discover themselves by having a desire for national development, deciding on such desire, developing a methodology to accomplish such desire and descending, after implementing the methodology.
Citing the biblical example of Zacchaeus - the chief tax-collector at Jericho, the NUGS President tasked the youth to desist from following what everyone else is doing but rather break the status-quo and do something exceptional, adding that it is the exception in doing things that will help the youth in attaining higher heights and hence develop the nation.
He made the comments while addressing students of Zenith University College at a seminar organized by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the university.
Speaking on the topic ‘the role of the youth in national development’, Mr. Paa-Quecy Adu added that for the youth to be exceptional they have to work on their attitudes, they should be principled and they should set standards for themselves.
‘Work on your attitudes, live by principles, set standards for yourselves, work on achieving them and stand for something. If you stand for everything, you will fall for anything’, he noted.
He finally advised the youth to make reading their habit in order to acquire knowledge.
On her part, a lecturer and the Head of the Career and Guidance Centre of the university, Mad. Asana Amadu also noted that her outfit is always ready to guide students on their guidance issues and therefore encouraged them not to hesitate to visit the office for their problems to be solved.
The SRC President of Zenith University College, Ahmed Issah also addressing students on the topic ‘the role of the youth in ensuring a peaceful election in Ghana, advised the youth to desist from perpetrating acts that could cause conflicts but rather preach peace before, during and after the November 7 polls.
