Mrs Faustina Yorke-Awotwe, Western Regional Director of the Department of Children, said it was time women were weaned from socio-cultural barriers that made them second to men.

She said society needed to change with time and support women empowerment programmes for holistic development.

Mrs Yorke-Awotwe was speaking at Amponsaso, a cocoa farming community in the Wassa East District of the Western Region, on the need for societal action towards the empowerment of women.

The event was put together by World Vision Ghana in partnership with Mondelez International under its Cocoa Life Initiative to encourage women in cocoa farming communities to be more responsible and conscious of their role as women alongside the men.

Mrs Yorke-Awortwe encouraged women to engage in economically viable activities to enable them to contribute meaningfully to society.

Mr Francis Gorman, who represented the World Vision Cluster Manager, entreated Ghanaian men to support their women in all aspects of development.

He said the failure of society to support women empowerment, coupled with the abuses women went through, continued to derail the efforts at giving the Ghanaian woman a voice.

Mr Anthony Aggrey, District Chief Executive of Wassa East, said there was the need for men to uphold issues of women adding, women had the power to change the world.

He alluded to the popular Ghanaian say of educating a woman to grow and develop a whole nation adding; “we cannot afford to neglect our women”.

Madam Yaa Peprah Amekudzi, Country Lead of Mondelez International, said the initiative was to increase women’s involvement and empowerment in cocoa farming.

She said women, under the cocoa life programme, now had their own farmlands with enhanced skills through share-cropping among other livelihood skills to better their lives.
