PROPOSAL TO SCRUB THE KILLER 25% TAX ON PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES BY THE NPP IS COMMENDABLE

The entire leadership as well as the rank and file of the Private University Students of Ghana (PUSAG) have received with great delight and utmost gratitude, proposal by the vice presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia that future NPP government would as a matter of necessity, scrub the 25% corporate tax slapped on private Universities. This promise is very much consistent with our countless plea with the current government, that introduced this killer policy to reverse it but to no avail. The soothing voice of Dr. Bawumia in this respect has therefore been received by every private university student in this country because it comes to us as a great relief.

We are very grateful for his scholarly appreciation and thoughts about the inexplicable suffering of private university students in Ghana who are being suffocated by killer fees partly due to government's decision to slap private universities in the country with as much as 25% corporate tax.

It is an incontestible fact that the legendary contributions of private Universities in Ghana towards complementing the efforts of government in the provision of tertiary education cannot be overemphasized. Currently, we have over 100,000 students schooling in the nation's private universities because the State is unable to provide tertiary education to all those who are willing and have duly qualified for same due to infrastructure and budgetary constraints bedeviling the few public universities in the country. Government is therefore enjoined to provide the enabling environment for the survival and flourishing of these private universities so that they can continue to provide their constituents, with the requisite skills and training needed for national growth and development.

It is apparent that about 80% of universities in Ghana today are private universities and colleges. These Universities however have gruelling national requirements such as autonomy status / charter issues which are crippling their potent possibilities. We believe that policies accepting the idealism of Private Universities should be laid down to soften the grounds for all parties involved (students, educational heads, parents etc.). In 2003, Private Universities Students massively benefited from GETFund scheme which saw to the bestowal of buses to some private institutions that were running at the time. Today, no private institution benefits from juicy GETfund packages aside meagre student loans available, which is indicative of the fact that governmental support for private universities has declined significantly.

PUSAG wishes all the NPP well in the coming November elections. Our constituents are very much enthused about the party’s promise by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to jettison this needless astronomical taxes levied on private universities. We want to emphatically put on record, that we are very much excited about this spoken word and hope to see it clearly captured in the party's manifesto to further accentuate our convictions. We hope and pray that the rest of the political parties in the country are also able to implement pragmatic policies that would meet the justifiable demands of private university students in Ghana for the love of God and country.

Education is and must remain a RIGHT.
Long live PUSAG
Long live Mother Ghana
Thank you.
