AIMS-Ghana Teacher Training Workshop
As part of AIMS-Ghana’s public engagement, the centre in collaboration with Pepperdine University organised a workshop for local senior high school maths teachers from six schools in the central region from 7 – 11 July 2014 on its campus at Biriwa. Twenty-one participants comprising thirteen males and eight females were taken through technology and media making as tools for learning. The event embraced collaboration of teachers and students in creation of videos to help advance classroom learning in mathematics. Proactive teaching and learning activities and mathematical software like GeoGebra was used to help students learn maths in a simplified way. Mobile lab of 10 touch screen computers were used for the activities, which provided the opportunity for discussion around how technology could be brought into African classrooms. The training further included in-school workshops at three of the participating senior high schools.

The teachers were hosted throughout the week at the AIMS 24 hour learning environment with their international colleagues and facilitators. The workshop was led by Professor Eric Hamilton of Pepperdine University, USA and facilitated by Mr Zachariah Mbasu from Makhoho Secondary School in Kenya.

Participants indicated that the workshop has enhanced their knowledge in the use of media in the classroom and suggested extension of the training to more teachers including those at the basic education level in Ghana and across Africa. In addition, participants were pleased with the opportunity for networking and mentorship that they had as a result of being hosted together.
