The men were pictured in a village square in Laojunshan, Henan Province on Monday, surrounded by dozens of women going in for a hard punch, reports the People’s Daily Online.
Signs were written on the backs of the life-sized blue punch bags that said: ‘If you’re angry please hit me.’
The women are given a once-in-a-year chance to ‘let off some steam’ by punching their spouses in the gut.
As the men lined up in the square, the women took it turns to punch their husband’s as hard as they could while wearing boxing gloves.
The event was not taken too seriously as they were seen laughing and joking with the men who were constrained by their punch bags.
Some of the women even kissed and hugged their husbands after punching them.
All the men had the same quote on the back of their bags except one which said: ‘A love punch bag.’
According to Chinese media reports, the event was organised to promote forgiveness between husbands and wives, empowering women on the lead up to International Women’s Day.
In particular, it is seen as an opportunity for the husbands to apologise to their wives for any misdeeds they may have committed during the past year.
International Women’s Day falls on March 8 each year.
According to the United Nations, it is a time to reflect on progress, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
