Meet Social Entreprenuer Caritas Aryee

“If I want to describe myself in one word it will be Blessed! My own life inspires me because I have seen suffering before; I saw my own life go down because I didn’t know what I wanted to do but God showed up and put me on track.”

Caritas Naa Ayele Aryee is a 27-year old, currently a student of Wisconsin University, an insurance agent with Millicom Ghana and an entrepreneur. She loves food, watching movies, hanging out and a deep passion of caring for people which led to her founding Tatas and Friends in July 2013 with the slogan “Touching Society A Soul at a Time”. In the space of 2 years, Tatas and Friends has over 30 members, with what originally started with only her.

In these 2 years, Tatas and Friends have had two projects being the #5Astick; a project that was targeted at the visually impaired. The success of which plunged the Ghana Blind Union into launching a white cane campaign. Their second project, #KenkeyForTheNeedy saw them auction kenkey and raising over GHS 10,000 for the Gbeogo School for the Deaf in Bolgatanga. Tatas and Friends have also made donations to Jay Nii Streetwise in Jamestown, Hac Ghana, United Heart Orphanage, Christian Foster Home in Frafraha among others.
In the next 5 years Caritas hopes to reach beyond Ghana and says “I want to see the Youth rise up and take charge, i want to see both male and female chase their dreams with everything within them,i want to see the youth make use of available resources and not abuse them especially Social Media.” However, she think the youth are pushing to make it, but not pushing hard enough and there’s more space to fill.
She encourages that whoever feels all hope is lost and they amount to nothing should believe in themselves and believe there is a God who makes the impossible possible and also that every moment is an opportunity so take control and make it count. We are all destined for greatness. Pray more.

Voters’ register: Youth revolution imminent – Sammy Awuku

The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Sammy Awuku, has warned of a youth revolution if his party’s call for a new voters’ register is not heeded to.

In a Facebook post Friday afternoon, Awuku, whose party took part in a two-day stakeholders’ forum on the call for a new voters’ register said:
By her posture and utterances, the EC boss is setting the stage to deny the youth and the people of Ghana a new and credible voters register for the 2016 elections.
We will not sit down for our future to be toyed with. The cost of a new credible voters register is cheaper than the cost of violence.
Guess its time for the Youth to Arise! We cannot afford to fail the masses in 2016. Youth Revolution imminent.”

The Electoral Commission has served notice it will look into claims of a bloated voters register being advanced by the NPP.

Chairperson of the EC Mrs. Charlotte Osei said on Friday that her body is awaiting some more documents from the NPP and would look into the issues once they were provided.

Payment of book & research allowance underway – Okudjeto

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary
A Deputy Minister of Education in charge of tertiary, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, says payment of stalled arrears for book and research for university and polytechnic lecturers, is underway following the release of funds by government.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) had threatened to embark on another strike if government fails to pay up their Book and Research allowance by October 23. UTAG suspended a one-week old strike on August 13, following assurances from government that the allowances were going to be paid.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Francis Gbadago, told Citi News last week, that some Ghc15.9 million had been released so far for disbursement. Speaking on the Point Blank segment of Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Mr. Okudjeto Ablakwa confirmed that some lecturers had already received their share.
“The latest is that the cheques are now ready at the National Council for Tertiary Education; and the council has informed me that they have communicated with authorities at the universities and the polytechnics and that the finance officers can now pick their cheques.

In addition, I do know that a number of institutions have already picked their cheques and so we are now paying the allowance. I know that not all lecturers have received it as at now, but the process is ongoing, so I want to ensure the university and polytechnic community that we have largely addressed the issue.

We are making sure that we do not have any distraction in the academic calendar and so we are committed to that “he noted. According to him, the payment process is a bit cumbersome hence the delay.

The process is a very detailed one because we want to be sure of lecturers who are still in active service and in good standing so the lecturers’ list is audited. After that, it is submitted to the ministry through the NCTE, and then we submit it to Finance before we know the total number of lecturers entitled to the allowance. The Ministry of Finance then issues the warrant for the Controller and the Bank of Ghana to write the cheque, before it is forwarded to the Ministry of Education. We then send it to the NCTE; from where it is forwarded to the institutions for payment to be done; and so that is how the cycle is. It is paid once at the end of every academic year”.

Okudjeto Ablakwa added that government is committed to setting up the National Research Fund to do away with the old system of supporting research, which is ineffective.

Currently the draft law on the fund has been completed and it is before cabinet and will go to Parliament soon. We want to have an independent body that will administer this fund so that it will not be based on the priorities of any government or political party. The higher institutions of learning will be allowed to manage their research fund so that lecturers will have the confidence because knowledge is universal and so we must maintain the autonomy of our tertiary institutions,” he noted.

UCC blind students call for support

The Campus Volunteer Foundation (CVF) of the University of Cape Coast has called for support from the public to help raise funds to purchase voice recorders for visually impaired students of the university to facilitate their learning activities.

Recorders play a major role in the lives of visually impaired students, besides the Brail, since recorders enable them to access learning materials.

Mr Hafiz Laryea, the President of CVF-UCC, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that recorders for about 30 visually impaired students of the university were defective.

He said the foundation decided to launch the initiative by soliciting funds to enable it to purchase the recorders for the students.

Responsibility

“We found this as a responsibility and challenge — to stand up for them by raising GHc9,000 to purchase 30 voice recorders which cost GHc300 each for our mates.

“To us, this is what volunteerism is all about — the way an active, apolitical citizenry recognises needs and provides services or makes efforts to address them well before the government or institution heads do. This is the way towards building a better society. We have little or no excuse as students,” he stated.

Mr Laryea said soon volunteers would hit the lecture theatres and offices of lecturers to appeal to benevolent people and organisations to ensure success.

He appealed to students, the Students Representative Council, the local National Union of Ghana Students, lecturers, philanthropists, as well as benevolent groups, to contribute to the great cause, noting, “Everyone can make a difference.”

Volunteer organisation

The CVF is a student volunteer organisation on campus which instills the spirit of volunteerism in all students.

It reaches out in diverse ways to impact the society positively and lets tertiary students understand that volunteerism is a great tool towards a better society.

Mr Laryea said individuals, groups and organisations that wanted to support the noble cause should contact the Resource Centre representative or the President of the CVF on +233207799146/+233248373780 for more details.

Accounts on donations and updates of the project will also be posted on the social media pages of the CVF.

Fraudulent academic activities going on at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW)

Fraudulent academic activities going on at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), are progressively tainting the hard-earned reputation of the institution of teacher education in the country.

Dishing out suspicious grades and certificates to undeserving students in certain departments is the order of the day. When the attention of the university authorities was drawn to this, by way of petition, the petitioners were sadly ignored.

Some lecturers and professors, according to sources, have expressed grave worry about these unwholesome developments. After filing their petitions, they are either ignored completely or have committees, which never sit, constituted.

Reports available to The Chronicle point to some institutions, including foreign universities, refusing to offer admission to some graduates from the UEW, whose certificates and grades contained on their transcripts are in doubt.

Again, there are serious internal criminal activities swept under the carpet, which have also been brought to the fore, causing concern about whether there is a verification system to check the background of staff and students.

It is surprising how students who were officially withdrawn for poor performance continue studying in the university, graduate and are awarded degrees. It is reported that there are a couple of such persons with suspicious UEW degrees in the system.

A telling instance is that of one student (name withheld), who two years ago, was shortlisted for an interview in the department of French Education. One of his lecturers petitioned the Dean of the Faculty of Research and Graduate Studies, challenging the basis for his call for the programme.

The student, according to the petitioner, had received unmerited grades leading to his graduation. Besides, prior to his graduation, he was assigned to the petitioner for a compulsory On-Campus Teaching Practice, "but he did not take part with his team members." The university, upon receipt of this petition, treated the issue with contempt, after forming a lame duck committee to look into the matter.

Buffalo & Lion Endure Epic Hour-Long Fight, Both Fatally Injured

Desperate male lion attacked lone adult buffalo after being cast out of pride in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. Tense fight left both animals exhausted and smeared with blood, with the lion dying of its wounds two days later.
The gut-wrenching pictures were taken by Matt Armstrong-Ford, 25, in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.

The amateur photographer, from Eastbourne, who works for Shenton Safaris as a guide and camp manager, came across the bloody scene as the lion's claws were hooked into the female buffalo's muzzle.

He recognised the cat as a six-year-old lion who suffered from mange, a type of skin disease, and who had become detached from his pride.

The lion had camped himself next to a watering hole hoping to attack unsuspecting buffalo.

Man sneaks into women’s loo to eat faeces

According to a news report from China, a man regularly sneaks into women’s loo to eat faeces.

The report said the Guangdong man was caught emerging from the toilet after indulging in his mind-bogglingly disgusting habit.

Shanghaiist.com, a legitimate news source, suggests he has done it for eight years. A translation of the broadcast said: “A man has been spotted on multiple occasions entering a ladies’ restroom at a shopping centre in the Pengjiang district of Jiangmen city, Guangdong province, and eating excrement found in the toilet.

“According to a security guard at the shopping plaza, the man has been spotted visiting the toilets since early this year. He goes to the second floor ladies’ room to find faeces to eat. He usually comes between 8am to 10am during the first half of the day and then comes again at around 3pm,” the guard said.

He added that the man walks in on women before they are able to finish flushing the toilet.”

The news source claims a local female resident told Guangdong TV that reports of the man wandering into public restrooms have left her feeling incredibly uneasy, because he is seen lurking in another female toilet nearby.

A doctor from the No. 3 Hospital of Jiangmen city said it is possible that he has a history of mental illness.

The women’s toilets at the mall have been locked up and residents are now calling on the government to help seek treatment for the man. The man when confronted said he eats faeces when he is hungry and always feels better after eating it, adding that he has been doing so for eight years.

3 Women Raped A Man At Gunpoint to Steal His Semen In A Cooler-Box In South Africa

A South African man has told how he was kidnapped and raped by three women in Cape Town. The 33-year old man, whose identity is being kept away from the media, said the women had stopped him in their car to ask for directions and as he was talking to them, one of them brought out a gun and forced him into the back of their black BMW and drove away.He said they drove him to an unknown place far from where they kidnapped him, then began touching him to get aroused. When he didn’t, because the only thing he felt then was fear, the women forced him to drink an ‘unknown substance’ from a bottle to make him hard.

He said all three women then took turns on him and when he came, they took his semen in plastic bags, placing them in a cooler box. After they had finished, they kicked him out of the car around Kwazakhele township, Port Elizabeth, and made off with his sperm.

A South Africa police officer said. ‘‘This is really confusing to us because we have never heard of such a thing before. The man was fully conscious throughout his ordeal and he is still traumatised.’’

Language has everything to do with poverty

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang the Minister of Education, advocates the use of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction in schools
In the Tuesday, October 20 issue of the Daily Graphic, Kofi Akordor, in his “from my Rooftop” column, asked in his title, “What has language got to do with poverty?”, and I say, “Everything”.

Let us begin by asserting the undeniable link between socio-economic development and quality education and, by so doing, establish the corollary that the lack of quality education leads to poverty. Now, it has been proved in every society, nation and clime that quality education is largely dependent on the medium of instruction.

Research has also been conclusive on the fact that those with a solid mastery of their mother tongue (termed L1) are not only better at mastering a second language (L2) which, in our case is English (cf the great African writers – Soyinka, Achebe, Awoonor, Armah, Anyidoho, Ngugi, etc.), but also better at understanding concepts in science, mathematics, philosophy, etc. The point here is that with a firm grounding in the mother tongue, the child has a cognitive reference point on which to build all subsequent learning processes.

It is for this reason that almost all formerly colonised countries outside Africa (with the exception of settler nations such as USA, Canada, Australia and Latin-American nations) use their national (indigenous) language (s) as the medium of instruction, adopting various formulas or arrangements as they deem appropriate and developing programmes for the study of the relevant foreign language (s) for regional and global integration. Such is the case with China, India, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc., countries which, undeniably, have chalked up considerable development successes.

Exhaustive studies

In Africa, there are a few success stories such as Burundi, Rwanda and Madagascar, but in most countries, and especially here in Ghana, we are still grappling with the language policy issue, though having adopted a specific language policy, we should consider the debate over and concentrate on proper planning, execution and monitoring. I believe this is because a large number of decision makers and commentators are either ignorant of the exhaustive studies already done and the details of Ghana’s current language policy, or simply wasting our time, shouting from the rooftop.

For example, Kofi Akordor’s concerns over the multiplicity of languages and dialects are centuries late. Dialectal, regional, even occupational and group differences are a constant in any language scenario. There is a concept called language standardisation which applies to all languages adopted as a national or regional language, be it in the so-called developed nations or in the developing ones.

It is a process by which stakeholders settle on a particular variant of the said language, with a number of dialectal accommodations, which then becomes the standard language. This has already been done in most of the Ghanaian indigenous languages - Akan (Fante and Twi), Nzema, Ga, Ga-Adangbe, Ewe, Gonja, Kasem, Dagbani, and Dagaare. As a matter of fact, it began with the Christian missionaries’ translations of the Bible into the Ghanaian languages and language programmes for purposes of proselytism, and it was on the basis of this standardisation that these languages have been used in schools and taught as undergraduate and sometimes postgraduate courses in the University of Ghana, Legon, University of Cape Coast and especially in the University of Education, Winneba.

Yes, the multiplicity of indigenous languages in Ghana poses a challenge, but for which ample studies and proposals have been made, waiting for implementation, especially with regard to the urban centres where there is a concentration of this multiplicity of ethnic origins.

It is pertinent, at this point, to remind our readers that contrary to what Mr Akordor thinks, the language scenario in the USA is not at all homogeneous and smooth. All the language nationalities there (notably the Hispanic) are in various ways vindicating a presence and visibility. So it is in France (Breton and Basque), Spain (Basque and Catalan) and Belgium (Wallon and Flemish).

Native language as medium of instruction

It is also necessary to point out that all the prosperous nations mentioned by Mr Akordor use as their medium of instruction, at least at the initial stage, a language which is native to the majority of their inhabitants, not a foreign language.

How do we get government policies and development programmes understood and bought into by our people if we cannot communicate with them in our native languages? How can we communicate with them in our native languages if most of those manning our institutions, products of our school system, are not proficient in their mother tongues? Just listen to any attempt at radio or TV discussion in any of our local languages and calculate the percentage of English expressions. Neither is the quality of our performance of English, in most cases, anything to write home about. Heads we lose, tails we lose! With this situation, how can we develop? This, I believe, is the point the Minister was putting across.

Again, let it be stressed that this is not about rivalry between our native languages and English, or any other foreign language. As Mr Akordor correctly stated, the Germans, French, Spaniards, Portuguese, etc., are learning English, but not as a hidden secret; it is for regional and global integration, especially within the context of the European Union. Are we Ghanaians learning French, as our official language policy stipulates, to integrate properly into ECOWAS?

The failure to eradicate poverty does not reside in the axiomatic expressions being ridiculed by Mr Akordor, but in our inability to read up on issues and take necessary steps to implement policies we have signed up to. Our indigenous languages do not deserve the patronising “Local languages must not die” assurance. They are the source of our identity, strength, pride and cosmovision. They hold the key to our development.

Ho Poly to establish research center on food safety

The Ho Polytechnic is to establish a Research Centre into food safety and technology in its Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Professor Emmanuel Kodzo Sakyi, the Rector of the Polytechnic, has announced. He was speaking at the end of the first National Food Hygiene and Sanitation Conference in Ho.

The two-day Conference was initiated by the Polytechnic’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology on the theme, “Food Hygiene, Sanitation and Safety in the Post-MDG Era.” The conference provided the platform for practitioners in the local food industry, academia, regulatory bodies and experts to deliberate on ways to arrest the mounting food safety, hygiene and sanitation concerns in the country. Professor Sakyi said the Polytechnic had the capacity to undertake research and provide practical solutions to issues of the local economy and national development.

“…We are set to train professionals to provide expert advice to government and industry on what to do to address food safety issues,” Professor Sakyi assured. He said the Polytechnic had the capacity and competencies for research and consultancy towards resolving developmental issues as expected of it. He said the papers presented at the conference by experts in academia, industry and regulatory institutions would be reviewed and edited by a team of experts and compiled into a document to guide action towards addressing the country’s food hygiene, safety and sanitation concerns practically. About 30 expert papers on several aspects of Food hygiene, Safety and Sanitation were presented at the conference. Meanwhile, the Ho Polytechnic would on Friday, October 15, organise a lecture on the conversion of the Polytechnics into Technical Universities, as part of the Rector’s lecture series.

Stranded students receive allowances studying abroad

Some 10 Ghanaian students on the Government of Ghana scholarship who were stranded abroad due to non-payment of their allowances by the Scholarship Secretariat can now heave a sigh of relief as available information indicates that the arrears were paid last week.

Student sources in Macedonia said the outstanding allowances were paid on Friday, October 23, 2015, by the accountant from Ghana’s Embassy in Rome. They said the plane tickets for students who had completed their courses of study but who could not secure plane tickets to return home had also been given tickets.

The Ghanaian Embassy in Rome, Italy, which has oversight responsibility for the payment of the allowances of the students in Macedonia, confirmed the payment and release of plane tickets to some of the students.

In a telephone interview with the Director of the Scholarship Secretariat, Mr Fuseini Lansah, yesterday, he said, “we have not only paid the allowances of the students in Serbia and Macedonia; we are also putting measures in place to ensure that in future, such an unfortunate situation does not recur”.

He said plans were advanced for the allowances to be released promptly so that students would have the peace of mind to concentrate on their studies.

It would be recalled that the Daily Graphic carried a story on the back page of its September 24, 2015 edition that some 10 students on the Government of Ghana Scholarship in Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine and Morocco were stranded.

The story said the students were owed allowances for over a year and that those who had completed their courses and were expected in the country by June, 2015 to do their national service could not do so because their plane tickets were not ready.

The paper reported that its checks at the Ghanaian embassy in Rome, which had the responsibility of paying the students’ allowance on behalf of the scholarship secretariat, revealed that no money had been credited to the embassy for that purpose.

Nepal elects first female president

Nepalese politicians have elected a longtime women’s rights campaigner to become the country’s first female president, as the Himalayan nation pushes for more gender equality in politics and work life.

Bidhya Devi Bhandari, the 54-year-old deputy leader of Nepal’s Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist, had lobbied actively for the new constitution to require that either the president or vice president be a woman.

Nepal has been trying to shift from a traditionally male-dominated society, where women are mostly limited to working at homes or on farms, to one in which women have equal access to opportunities and legal rights.

Politicians cheered as Bhandari’s name was announced as the new president on Wednesday, the AP news agency reported.

An ally and party colleague of Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, Bhandari had been considered the favourite for the largely ceremonial job.

Bhandari said her election - by a vote of 327-214 against Congress party leader Kul Bahadur Gurung - marked a first step toward assuring the new constitutional guarantees of equality are fulfilled.

The constitution, adopted last month, also requires that one-third of the country’s members of parliament be women, and that women be included in all government committees.

And last week, Onsari Gharti was elected as the country’s first female parliament speaker.

Bhandari has been a leading political figure since 1993 when her late husband, Communist party Madan Bhandari, was killed in a car accident.

She led demonstrations against the former King Gyanendra in 2006, helping drive the country toward ending his authoritarian rule and restoring democracy.

Bhandari is Nepal’s second president since then. She replaces President Ram Baran Yadav, who was elected in 2008 for a two-year term that was extended when efforts to draft a new constitution stalled over seven years.

Africans Are Lazy Fools Only Good At Lovemaking And Stealing’- Donald Trump

AMERICA'S Republican Party presidential candidate Donald Trump

United States’ Presidential candidate in the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump has once again vented his disgust for Africans by referring to them as lazy fools only good at eating, lovemaking and thuggery.

Billionaire business magnate Mr Trump, who is seeking to become the Republican Party's flag bearer in next year's presidential elections, expressed his deep disgust for Africans over the weekend by referring to them as lazy fools only good at eating, lovemaking and thuggery. Speaking in Indianapolis, he reiterated his promise to deport Africans especially those of Kenyan origin including their son Barrack Obama if he becomes president.

Mr Trump said:
African-Americans are very lazy. The best they can do is gallivanting around ghettoes, lamenting how they are discriminated and these are the people America doesn’t need.
They are the enemies of progress. Look at African countries like Kenya for instance, those people are stealing from their own government and go to invest the money in foreign countries."
He added that Americans cannot trust those who have ran away to hide in the US and he does not care if they abuse him. According to Mr Trump, even the internet they are using belongs to the US and America can decide to switch it off from this side.
These are people who import everything including matchsticks and in my opinion, most of these African countries ought to be recolonised again for another 100 years because they know nothing about leadership and self governance. I promise to make America great again by restoring our dignity that we have since lost through Obama.
The more reason why I still believe that he and his Kenyan brothers and sisters should be deported back to Kenya to make America safe. From the government to the opposition, they only qualify to be used as a case study whenever bad examples are required," Mr Trump added.

His rant did not augur well with the fellow Republican candidate Carson Camp and his campaign team has since distanced itself from Mr Trump words. Mr Camp is aiming to become the first African-American Republican Party presidential candidate.

Speaking at a passing out ceremony for some officers, the IGP said the University will serve the purpose of modern policing.
It is our vision that sooner than later; this college will together with all our training institutions; get the required accreditation from the Accreditation Board so that it becomes the Ghana Police University College.
The University will focus on excellence in enforcement training not only in Ghana but the whole of the sub-region. And with the can-do attitude that we’ve all pledged ourselves to, this will happen very soon,” Alhassan noted.

University of Ghana ranked among World’s top universities

A new university ranking compiled by Thompson Reuters has listed the top 10 tertiary institutions on the African continent, lead by South Africa’s University of Cape Town.

The ranking looks specifically at university reputation, which reflects a university’s ability to recruit high-quality staff and students, establish valuable international partnerships, and connect with greater funding prospects.

The group determined its ranking by analysing all its reputation survey results to date (2010-2014), which contain more than 1.5 million individual data points and have recorded 65,000 responses, covering 6,500 of the world’s leading universities across 105 disciplines.

Africa’s Leading Universities was determined over the five-year period by survey respondents specifically living in Africa.

The ranking is dominated by South African universities, with the University of Cape Town as the clear regional leader in academic reputation.

UCT has consistently topped global university rankings for South Africa, with the exception of one, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), which was claimed by the University of the Witwatersrand.

Based on its global ranking, the regional reputation of Egypt’s Cairo University is significantly lower than expected, Thompson Reuters said.
This may be a reflection of its geographical location to the Middle East,” the group said.
The University of Cape Town is also the only university on the continent to crack the top 200, according to the data, ranking 160th overall.

Cairo University, Wits and TUKS all made it into the top 500.
