Ho Poly to establish research center on food safety

The Ho Polytechnic is to establish a Research Centre into food safety and technology in its Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, Professor Emmanuel Kodzo Sakyi, the Rector of the Polytechnic, has announced. He was speaking at the end of the first National Food Hygiene and Sanitation Conference in Ho.

The two-day Conference was initiated by the Polytechnic’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology on the theme, “Food Hygiene, Sanitation and Safety in the Post-MDG Era.” The conference provided the platform for practitioners in the local food industry, academia, regulatory bodies and experts to deliberate on ways to arrest the mounting food safety, hygiene and sanitation concerns in the country. Professor Sakyi said the Polytechnic had the capacity to undertake research and provide practical solutions to issues of the local economy and national development.

“…We are set to train professionals to provide expert advice to government and industry on what to do to address food safety issues,” Professor Sakyi assured. He said the Polytechnic had the capacity and competencies for research and consultancy towards resolving developmental issues as expected of it. He said the papers presented at the conference by experts in academia, industry and regulatory institutions would be reviewed and edited by a team of experts and compiled into a document to guide action towards addressing the country’s food hygiene, safety and sanitation concerns practically. About 30 expert papers on several aspects of Food hygiene, Safety and Sanitation were presented at the conference. Meanwhile, the Ho Polytechnic would on Friday, October 15, organise a lecture on the conversion of the Polytechnics into Technical Universities, as part of the Rector’s lecture series.
