Mahama doesn’t deserve 2nd term – Nana Addo

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo Addo, has said the Mahama administration does not deserve another term in office.

According to Nana Addo, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has done little to improve the lives of Ghanaians. Addressing a public forum in Accra, Nana Akufo Addo said there is a general call for change in the country. Citing the example of how Nigerians ditched Goodluck Jonathan and voted massively for Buhari, Nana Addo said that will also be Ghana’s story in the November polls.

“2016 marks the end of the second consecutive term of the NDC since 2009. The 2016 general election is a critical one for our country; critical not only because it signals the end of an incumbent party’s second term in office but even more critical in determining the future direction of our country and the well-being of our people.”

He said the November general elections bestow on Ghanaians the opportunity to stop the Mahama-government from further deteriorating the country’s chances and help the “sinking ship” to “change course.” The NPP flagbearer observed that “unemployment especially among the youth is widespread,” a situation his government will reverse.

“Macro-economic indicators are troubling, to say the least. Inflation is not persistent, upward trajectory, currently over 19% and our bank lending rate is well above 30%. The cost of utility particularly electricity poses a major if not insuperable challenge for the ordinary budget.

Mahama’s government answers to all these problems have been to roll out a so-called Green Book containing a so-called achievement. This book supposedly sets out a record of infrastructural projects, many of which have turned out to be artist’s impression and non-existent on the ground,” he added.

EC has a plan with the NDC - Nana Akomea

Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akomea says the Electoral Commission is scheming with the ruling National Democratic Congress, hence the Commission's decision not to delete National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card registrants.

Nana Akomea expressed worry over the EC's position on the Supreme Court ruling that the Commission should remove names of disqualified persons.

The Supreme Court ordered the Electoral Commission to delete from the register names of persons who don't have the qualification to be on the register together with minors and deceased persons.

But EC interpretation of the court order indicated that the court didn't order a removal of names of NHIS registrants from the electoral roll.

"For persons who registered with NHIA cards, such registrations were lawful at the time of registration, and the subsequent declaration of unconstitutionality in the earlier Abu Ramadan case does not automatically render them void.' Such a position according to the Supreme Court 'would have the effect of disenfranchising the persons affected. Such registrations should only be deleted by means of processes established under the law'," the statement said.

Speaking on Peace FM's kokrokoo,' the NPP Communications Director noted it appears the NDC and the EC are singing the same hymn so far as the registration of persons with NHIS card is concerned.

To him, the registration with NHIS card has always been the "plot" of the NDC, and the EC interpretation of the court order exposes the Commission and the ruling party.

“Electoral Commission of Ghana has a plan with the NDC. If you could recall, our brethren in the NDC said their understanding is we’ve not said they should delete Health Insurance registrants from it; during the time that the Supreme Court made their ruling. So, the position of the NDC is that the Supreme Court hasn’t said we should remove Health Insurance registrants... Barely two weeks after, the Electoral Commission says per their understanding, we haven’t said they should remove the Health Insurance registrants. It means the Electoral Commission is saying exactly what the NDC is saying regarding the Health Insurance card," he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

Cameroon deports over 100 Ghanaian peacekeepers

The authorities in Cameroon have denied entry to over 100 Formed Police Unit (FPU) of Ghana Police assigned to peacekeeping duties in South Sudan, according to reliable reports reaching The General Telegraph.According to the reports, the over 100 police officers were arrested and deported by the Cameroonian officials on Wednesday on account of improper documentation.

Tension and frustration among members who were on the peacekeeping mission have reached its peak after they were allegedly deported by Cameroon on Wednesday.

The reports indicate that the over 100 police officers were stopped in Cameroon and grilled for over 4 hours before they were released.

It was also reported that some of the police officers who were on a chartered flight to Sudan for the peacekeeping were carrying AK47 and other equipment.

Sources within the Ghana Police Service say the frustrated police officers are angry at the way and manner the processes took place.

“We were due to Sudan for the peacekeeping mission. We were grilled for over 4 hours before we were deported back to our country. We believe that our officials did not do the proper documentations. The fact actually is that we could not go to South Sudan because we lack proper documentation period,” one angry police officer told this paper.

Director of Public Affairs of Ghana Police, Superintendent Cephas Arthur, when contacted confirmed the trip of his men to South Sudan on Wednesday but was unaware of their deportation.

He told this paper that, “I am not sure of the arrest and deportation. Our Formed Police Unit travelled to South Sudan, but I am not sure of the deportation,” he said.

However, deep sources within the intelligence agencies told this paper that the police were not arrested but were not given an opportunity to enter the country.

The source, however, confirmed that it was rather the officials of the Cameroon that denied Ghanaians entry.

The source said the flight did not land but immediately returned to Ghana.

According to him, his party has the solution to Ghana’s problems, and must be given the chance to turn the fortunes of the nation around.The NPP has the view that Ghana has all it takes to succeed and better the lives of its citizens, but the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has not been able to achieve this and have instead led the country into a ditch.

Speaking at a gathering of chiefs and people of Anhwiase in the Western Region, Nana Addo said the NPP has what it takes to make Ghana better.

“I besiege you all to pray for me because the hardship that the country is about to face is unimaginable, but the NPP has the true solutions to these looming challenges. We have the solution to change the cause of the nation’s destiny and lift the masses out of misery.

“We have the solution to put food on the table, create jobs and comfort for all Ghanaians. I want you to have faith in me and my vision for the nation and I want to promise you that God willing when I get the presidential nod I will not disappoint you,” he added.

Ghana Police investigates female officer involved in a sex video

The Ghana Police Service is investigating one of its female personnel whose sex video leaked and went viral on social media early this week.

Director of Public Affairs of the Service, Supt. Cephas Arthur confirmed the lady at the centre of the video that has been circulating on WhatsApp is indeed one of their officers, noting a service enquiry has commenced to establish if she has flouted any law.
“The police have set up an enquiry to investigate the issue, we will check if she has flouted any laws of Ghana or the Police Service, Supt Arthur told Onua FM's Christian Agyei Frimpong Friday.

He said the investigation would also seek to establish the source of the leak, saying "We will also investigate who circulated the video. if it was something she did for her private personal use and someone circulated it, then it’s a criminal matter, if she took those video herself, circulated it, we shall investigate all.”

The lady [name withheld], a Sergeant, who was stationed at the Sunyani Regional Police CID, was said to have been transferred to the Police CID Headquarters in Accra following the leak of the sex video.

Sources say the lady has fallen sick due to the incident and currently on admission at the Police Hospital in Accra.

She was said to have attempted suicide but this, Supt Arthur said, “I have not heard anything about what you are asking me, but I can tell you she is safe, alive, doing well and we have started our investigations”

The lady is seen in the video, which appeared to have been recorded with a webcam, naked in a room where she danced and made sexually teasing moves while she played with her body seductively.

Man arrested for threatening to blow up Italian Embassy

There was drama at the Italian Embassy in Accra Friday morning as a young man threatened to blow up the Embassy, located on the Switchback Crescent, Cantonments.
The Counter Terrorism Unit of the Ghana Police Service however, acted swiftly and bundled him away before he could actualize his threat.

The unnamed young man, said to be a visa applicant, had stormed the Embassy with a gas cylinder and a lighter ready to torch the place.

Superintendent Raymond Aggrey Fynn, Head of the Counter Terrorism Unit who led a team to arrest the man, along with his family including his wife, son and brother, told Graphic Online that the suspect had earlier in the morning been reported to have hurled stones into the Embassy compound amidst threats to blow it up.

“We understand he had a misunderstanding with the Embassy officials. When we came here earlier after the stone-throwing reports, he had left, only for him to return with gas and fire to attempt to carry out his threat”, he told Graphic Online.

A brother of the suspect broke down in tears as police vehicles drove the family to the CID Unit at the Police Headquarters.

Eyewitnesses
By-standers who witnessed the drama claimed the man had complained repeatedly of the Embassy’s refusal to return his documents, including birth and marriage certificates of his wife who had been refused the visa.

Their young son, however, had been granted the visa.
Another claim was that the man’s frustration had stemmed from the Embassy’s endorsement of his wife’s travelling documents in ways that rendered them ‘useless’.

“But how do you give a child visa and refuse his mother?” quipped one witness, who added, “Does it make sense or they want the child to go and stay alone?”

Help the police
When calm had been restored, Superintendent Raymond Aggrey Fynn found it an opportunity to counsel other visa applicants and members of the public who had gathered at the scene on their immediate responsibilities, safety and security in matters of police operations.

He said the entire drama could have been avoided had members of the public been vigilant enough to at least alert the police when the man walked by them with the cylinder and lighter threatening destruction.

Again, he said, most of the people were gleefully watching the unfolding drama at close quarters even as the police deployed to quell the threat, thereby putting themselves in harm’s way and that in such developing situations, even the police could be victims.

He said in such a situation, everyone needed to move as far away as they could to avoid becoming victims.
